With Governors Island Opening, New Yorkers Get Another Spot To Stretch Their Legs

Governors Island reopened on July 15. And there’s much to embrace with this hidden-in-plain-sight gem, located just eight minutes south of Manhattan, where locals can enjoy the outdoors. But first, please remember that the virus is still out there and that this is no time to cozy up to one another. So it’s still crucial to practice social-distancing measures. 

And for those planning a trip to New York Harbor, please note a few items in advance of your trip.   

—Governors Island is taking appropriate safety precautions. All visitors must reserve tickets before showing up. This way the island can ensure that events do not exceed occupancy, and everyone can stay safe while far apart. 

—While most events have been canceled due to COVID-19, New Yorkers can still have an overnight “staycation” at their luxury glamping zone. Tents are currently available but going fast at their designated camping spots. 

—Hand-washing and sanitation stations have been installed across the island, in case one of your party needs to clean up and is nowhere near the indoor restrooms at Building 110. (Trailer restrooms are also available at Yankee Pier, the south end of Nolan Park, the west end of Liggett Terrace and near Slide Hill.) And, yes, the staff has increased the island’s cleaning schedules.

—Bring your own food if you please, but no alcohol. There are picnic tables available throughout the island to eat your snacks and meals. Alcohol can be purchased through one of the food vendors and consumed at designated areas. Check out the island’s lineup of dining and drinking options. 

—Ferries traveling to and from the island are wheelchair-accessible. Building 110, located next to Soissons Landing, is also wheelchair-accessible, as are restrooms throughout the island.
