New Yorkers Financially Hard-Hit By COVID-19 Can Apply For Interest-Free Loans

In 1892, 10 leaders in the Jewish community on Manhattan’s Lower East Side got together, pooled their money ($95!) and started making interest-free loans for as little as 50 cents to needy members of their community. Today, with coronavirus affecting so many people across the world, the Hebrew Free Loan Society is still focusing on helping New Yorkers by providing interest-free loans for those hard-hit by the pandemic.

If you are a resident of New York City, Westchester or Long Island, HFLS is offering interest-free loans in amounts ranging from $2,000 to $5,000. These loans are for those who are experiencing any of the following:

—Lost wages due to being unable to go to work

—Child care costs due to school closures

—Small-business losses

—Canceled study-abroad programs

—Related medical costs
