Open House New York Showcases Lower Manhattan
By: Joe Ferris
Next month, Open House New York once again throws open the doors to New York City’s historic sites, architectural wonders and some typically closed-off buildings. As the city’s oldest neighborhood, it’s no surprise that there are more than 20 Open House locations in Lower Manhattan.
These sites examine our past, explore the neighborhood’s present and look to our community’s future. Travel back to Lower Manhattan’s early day with a walking tour of The Commons, the city’s original town square that at one time or another has been a pasture, jail, almshouse, parade ground and more. Explore the area’s critical role in military defense on Governors Island before visiting skyscrapers old and new in the Woolworth Building’s lobby and a tour of 3 WTC. Then step into the studios of Lower Manhattan architectural firms to see where the city of tomorrow starts.
Open House New York is Saturday and Sunday, October 13-14. Tickets for sites that require reservations go on sale tomorrow at 11 AM. Below is a complete list of Lower Manhattan locations.
Happy exploring!
