Make a night of it
Skip out of work early to get in the spirit of Independence Day  by discovering Lower Manhattan’s role in the early days of our independent nation.

First, stop in at Federal Hall National Memorial
After the end of the Revolutionary War, George Washington became America’s first president right here at what is now Federal Hall National Memorial, which was also home to the first Congress, Supreme Court, and Executive Branch offices. After the capital moved to Philadelphia (and eventually to Washington D.C.), the building became New York’s City Hall before it was torn down in 1812. The current neoclassical building was completed in 1842 and is now home to a museum to George Washington and our country’s early years. Visitors can view parts of the original railing and balcony floor where Washington was inaugurated. Stop in before it closes at 5pm.  Address: 26 Wall Street, New York, NY, 10005

Frequent Fraunces Tavern Museum
Before he was President Washington, he was General Washington. Before you head to Mad Dog and Beans for dinner, why not also visit Fraunces Tavern, where General Washington declared the end of the revolution to his troops with a farewell address. The museum is also open  until 5pm. Address: 54 Pearl Street, New York, NY, 10004

SeaGlass Carousel and Sunsets over the Statue
After dinner, take a stroll to The Battery for a trip under the sea. The Seaglass Carousel lights up The Battery after dark, with 30 different fibre-glass underwater creatures to ride. From an angelfish to a clown triggerfish — the school is all here. The carousel is open till 10 PM and costs just $5.

After you’re finished at the carousel, grab a bench or pull up a beautiful piece of lawn to enjoy the sunset beyond the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Address: State & Water Streets, New York, NY, 10004
