October 12 is Indigenous People’s Day, an annual celebration of Native American heritage and culture. To mark it, the National Museum of the American Indian’s online series “Youth in Action: Conversations About Our Future” will host a discussion on mascots, monuments and memorialization.
Panelists include young Native activists who will speak on problematic historical figures, racist mascots and other tokens that have fueled conversations and action in current movements happening across America. The event features a virtual performance by hip-hop artist Frank Waln (Sicangu Lakota), and museum cultural interpreter Michaela Pavlat (Sault Ste. Marie Band of Chippewa Indians) will moderate the panel.
The event is free; you can register online.
