Governors Island Is The Place To Be In September

Summer may be over but don’t tell Governors Island. They’ve got a packed calendar for September with performances, film screenings and a food cart fiesta that are all worth checking out.  Here’s your guide to the events taking place in Manhattan’s backyard this month.

September 7 – LIVE Radio Broadcast

As part of extended Friday Hours, Maker Park Radio will be broadcasting live from the Island until 10p. DJs will be playing a mix of hip hop, Latin Jazz and punk interspersed with talk segments that will cover topics as varied as farming, brewing and literary arts.

September 8 & 9 – Pitchfork’s OctFest

Pitchfork is teaming up with October, a leading beer culture website, for the 2nd annual OctFest. Vince Staples, Jeff Tweedy, Yo La Tengo and The Flaming Lips headline the two-day festival, which will also feature 250+ beers from 90 breweries across 20 countries. Get your tickets and prepare to say “Prost!”

September 14 – Nighttime Film Screening

The Escape in New York film series wraps up with a screening of The Last Dragon on the Parade Ground. The evening begins at 6p with pre-screening music by Theodor Jahng. The Parade Ground is grassy, so make sure to bring a blanket or something to sit on.

September 22 – Food Truck Heaven

It’s a food truck takeover! The 14th annual Vendy Awards will feature 25 popular food trucks competing for the top spot in five categories. All you can eat and drink tickets are available with all proceeds go to the Street Vendor Project.

September 23 – Family Friendly Celebration of Africa

Celebrate Africa and the continent’s diaspora at the African Film Festival’s 11th Annual Family Fun Day Celebration. Starting at 11a, Governors Island will be filled with storytelling, double-dutch, dance and drum, and more family-friendly activities which are all free!
