Just when you thought summer was over – the heat’s back on! What better way to cool off than with a visit to LM’s newest artisanal ice cream shop, Van Leeuwen?
The story started with big dreams and humble beginnings in a small Brooklyn kitchen by three roommates back in 2007, launched to the classic ice cream truck and eventually became a mini-empire. Now with stores and trucks in NYC, LA, and even Amsterdam, as well as pints in grocery stores, our very own South Street Seaport was next in line for a location.
If you’re a more simple kind of ice cream lover, their classic recipes feature nothing more than fresh milk and cream, cane sugar and egg yolks. If you’re vegan, Van Leeuwen takes great care of you with scoops made with homemade cashew milk, organic coconut milk, extra virgin coconut oil, cane sugar, carob beans and pure cocoa butter. Each flavor is a celebration on your tongue of some of the world’s best artisan producers and farmers both local and from around the world.
Planet Earth (see above photo) made with matcha green tea cake, Honeycomb (deceptively made with no honey, just crunchy, chewy caramel candy), Chocolate Banana Cream Pie, Blackberry Palm Sugar Cake and many more interesting combinations await you.
They’ve even made it easier to replicate this yummy goodness at home with The Van Leeuwen Artisan Ice Cream Cookbook, sharing over 100 vegan and classic recipes along with stories from the past eight years.
So as summer fades to black, grab a scoop of their black sesame, coconut ash, chocolate cake (see featured photo)!
