The Cathedral of Commerce

woolworth-1

The other night I walked up Broadway to shop at J&R for some photography gear and stopped to admire the Woolworth Building. It’s an imposing, magnificent structure that opened in 1913 as the world’s tallest building. It held that standing until the opening of 40 Wall Street and the Chrysler Building in 1930. At the opening ceremony, it was nicknamed the Cathedral of Commerce by the Rev. S. Parkes Cadman.

This picture shows how, even from several blocks away, it looms over commuters on their way home.
