While the overall number of Guatemalans in Brooklyn remains small, the community has grown to about 12,000 in 2008 from 4,500 in 2005, according to census estimates. “We’re here but they don’t know,” said Pablo Rosales, the manager at the Maranata Restaurant, a cozy corner outpost on 18th Avenue, where the smell of chicken stew and the murmur of Mayan dialects fill the air.
