Geranium Lovers Occupy Bowling Green Park!

Thursday, October 13th, 2011

The rain held off yesterday and nearly 4,000 Bowling Green Park geraniums found themselves in the arms of thousands of Lower Manhattan residents and workers. In its fourth year, the wildly popular Adopt-a-Geranium event drew a constant stream of flower lovers, who waited patiently in a steadily moving line that wrapped around the park’s historic gates.

Adopt-A-Geranium Day 2011

Downtown Alliance President Elizabeth Berger and Council Member Margaret Chin pass out thousands of fresh geraniums.

Digging flowers up just as fast as they were given away, hardworking Downtown Alliance staff could barely keep up with demand. Luckily Downtown Alliance President Elizabeth Berger and Council Member Margaret Chin were at the helm, helping eager participants select the perfect plant. You can see some of the proud owners with their new flowers here.

Chef Maximo Lopez May

Andaz Wall Street’s Wall & Water Executive Chef Maximo Lopez May stands with his newly adopted geraniums.

Now that all of the geraniums have found loving homes, the Downtown Alliance is excited to prepare for its next Green Around Lower Manhattan event, Fall Community Planting Day, taking place on Saturday, October 22 from 10 AM to Noon. In preparation for spring, volunteers will help plant thousands of tulip bulbs in the same place the geraniums once proudly grew. What better way to occupy one of New York City’s oldest parks!

It’s NYC Restaurant Week at Wall & Water

Grilled stone fruit salad

It’s NYC Restaurant Week again—a great excuse to put on my roomy pants and head over to one of my favorite Lower Manhattan eateries!

This summer, my colleagues and I decided to pay a visit to Wall & Water in the Andaz Hotel.

We first visited the restaurant when the hotel opened about a year and a half ago and were impressed by their delicious Stone Fruit Salad.  The caramelized fruit sprinkled with goat cheese and drizzled with maple syrup, lemon and nuts is unique, interesting and like nothing else I had ever tasted before.  Once I saw that they were offering it on their menu for restaurant week, the decision to experience it again was obvious.  Not to mention, they had a steak entrée and their signature flourless chocolate cake on the menu as well!

So off we went.  Our waiter, Chris, was terrific!  He was friendly, attentive and knowledgeable—everything you’d expect and more.  He started us off with a complementary organic artichoke for the table with a delicious dipping sauce that wasn’t even part of the menu.

We then all shared and split our choices with each other.  All the fresh ingredients are produced locally—in fact, you might want to check out their farmers market on Wednesdays and Saturdays.  The open kitchen design and the casual sleek décor with couches and pillows make it seem like you are dining in a friend’s stylish apartment instead of a hotel restaurant.

Chef Maximo Lopez May has even held monthly cooking classes, so if I really wanted to learn how to make his delicious food, I could.  But for only $24.07 and no need to get my hands dirty, I think I’ll stick with the restaurant week menu for now!

Mess Around Downtown: February 2, 2010

Monday, February 1st, 2010

Welcome back to Mess Around Downtown!

Hello to all of my fellow Downtowners out there in blogland.  Is it me, or is the food getting better and better down here? More and more options keep popping up on streets all over Lower Manhattan for both lunch and dinner. Just a few days ago  I, along with some of my fabulous foodie co-workers, had the pleasure of lunching at SHO Shaun Hergatt in honor of Restaurant Week. The experience was certainly a five star delight for my sensory system. But it’s not just high falutin’ cuisine that’s showing up in droves.  Common folk need food too. And that’s why joints like Baoguette on Maiden Lane and the hip new Bon Chon Chicken on John Street are doing our common folk palates proud. Below are the additions and changes I’ve made to the Downtown Directory this past week. If you see any new retailers or changes to existing retailers, please do not hesitate to e-mail me at tre@downtownny.com and let me know.

Bon Chon Chicken – 104 John Street: 646-682-7747

The Korean style fried chicken at this place is so tasty and crispy that my co-worker and I have written and choreographed a theme song and dance that is done every time we even think about eating it. Word to the wise, if you’re in a hurry, call ahead to order. They make each batch individually and lunch time can get backed up. If you’re not in a hurry, go in, hang at the bar, and drink a beer while you wait. It’s worth it.

Who wouldn’t want to eat a meal cooked by a guy named Maximo?
