Meet a Lower Manhattan Business: Blue Smoke

Wednesday, August 1st, 2012

The smell of BBQ is now wafting through Lower Manhattan. Danny Meyer’s well-known Flatiron hot-spot has made its way to Battery Park City, and the beautifully designed, 100-person dining room is bustling with local workers, residents, and tourists throughout the day.

“There are so many exciting developments going on west of West Street,” says Blue Smoke Managing Partner Mark Maynard-Parisi. “With such a growing and vibrant community down here, we thought this was the right place and the right time to open our second location.”

Open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, this eatery offers many of the original Blue Smoke staples, like the Blue Smoke rib sampler and the crowd-pleasing macaroni and cheese. There are also some new editions on the Lower Manhattan menu, including seasonal salads and chicken gumbo. A series of large photographs commissioned by renowned photographer Frank Stewart lines the dining room as well as the 25-person private dining space.

Checking In At The Conrad

Friday, March 16th, 2012

Conrad New York is opening its doors on Monday, and the Downtown Alliance got an advance peak inside this shining star in Lower Manhattan. Sixteen stories tall, and overlooking the Hudson River waterfront, the Conrad’s lobby is a site to behold.

Take note of the giant Sol LeWitt artwork adorning an entire 13-story wall above the atrium’s registration desk. During our tour, we’re advised the piece – called Loopy Doopy – took 3,000 hours and 100 gallons of paint to create. Also note The Veil, an elaborate rope and steel structure that fills the Conrad’s main space, but allows for a vibrant, well-lighted atmosphere.

The 463-suite luxury hotel is the first for Conrad Hotels & Resorts in New York City, and just across the street from the Irish Hunger Memorial in Battery Park City. And it arrives on North End Avenue on the heels of well-celebrated openings of three adjacent Danny Meyer eateries – Blue Smoke, Shake Shack and North End Grill – as well as Artsee Eyewear, Francois Payard Bakery, Vintry Fine Wines, and more, all between Murray and Vesey streets.

The 2,000 pieces of contemporary art that adorn the walls – in rooms, public spaces and banquet rooms –was curated by the Public Art Fund and Elizabeth Gould Vales. Some of the artwork was created by Mary Heilmann, Elizabeth Peyton, and Sara Sosnowy.

Executive Chef Anthony Zamora, who recently came from Four Seasons Hotel New York, will oversee a signature, full-service restaurant, Atrio, which has space for private meals, and a full bar featuring wines from around the world.

The Conrad will provide one of the largest ballrooms we can remember in Lower Manhattan in ages, with room for 600 people, high ceilings, and soothing light fixtures and wind-chim-ish artwork strung over entrances.

Oh, and the rooftop bar, which we saw during an earlier tour (and in better weather!) has a name in keeping with the wonderful artwork you first notice downstairs: Loopy Doopy.

Lights On…In Lower Manhattan

Wednesday, February 1st, 2012

By Kelly Rush

Without vision, a people perish. Or, in my version of this proverb for the column: Without glasses from the right eyewear shop, one might not be able to find one’s way to the spa … or to the restaurant for ribs. In this week’s edition, pamper yourself with a facial, indulge in barbecue and get lost in art while you wait for your new custom eyeglass frames. As usual, if you see any new retailers or spot changes to a long-time friend, please email me at tre@downtownny.com and I’ll check them out.

Affina Beauty & Spa – 125 Church Street
(212) 233-8822 | www.affinaspa.com

It’s appropriate that Affina Beauty & Spa is located on Church Street because a trip here could be a heavenly experience. The interior looks like your ultra-hip friend’s loft with warming influences from grandma. Manager Shine Guo said spa employees designed the space themselves. It features a relaxing pale gray, blue and white color palette, dangling lights in whimsical shapes and floral artwork. Think of the manicures and pedicures offered here as an introduction, an opportunity to get your feet wet. The spa offers Swedish, deep tissue and hot-stone massage and several different facials such as the derma acne facial which clears up skin and prevents future breakouts from occurring.  Check back because the spa soon will be offering laser hair removal because no one wants to pluck for the rest of her life. Receive 20 percent off services until April 1.

North End Grill – 104 North End Avenue

North End Grill, the other new offering from Danny Meyer’s restaurant group in Battery Park City, is also operating at full capacity. Chef Floyd Cardoz, formerly of Tabla and a competitor on Top Chef Masters, is bringing his spin on high-end American cuisine to a lovely space overlooking the Hudson. Appetizers include Louisiana shrimp with fennel and radish or a torchon of foie gras with quince paste and grilled brioche. Entrees include a Nova Scotia halibut, diver sea scallops, a Berkshire pork chop or a duck breast and leg with leeks and tangerines.

Artsee Eyewear – 220 Murray Street
(212) 227-2400 | www.artseeeyewear.com

Curated art shows meet fashion frames at this eyewear shop across from the Shake Shack in the Goldman Sachs building’s restaurant alley. The current exhibition, David L. Nicholas’ Night Vision II, features large-scale and panoramic color photographs on the walls. The artwork accentuates the shop’s selection of eyeglass frames and both work in tandem to create a unique shopping experience.  General Manager Carlos Venegas said the exhibit space is currently booked; it’s easy to see why artists would want to showcase their work here. Frames sit atop pedestals and under glass domes that receive just the right amount of light from the fixtures above. Come for the eyewear, stay for the artwork.

Blue Smoke - 255 Vesey Street

Danny Meyer’s eatery has been getting a lot of press, so diners will be pleased to hear that Blue Smoke is finally serving its full menu full-time. The restaurant features many barbecue favorites such as Texas salt and pepper beef ribs, pulled pork and Kansas City spareribs and some unexpected treats including chicken gumbo and bourbon pecan pie. Vegetarian and gluten-free menus round out the options for people with allergies or restricted diets.  Just because Blue Smoke is a barbecue place doesn’t mean you have to indulge, but I would.

OBAO – 38 Water Street
(212) 361-6311 | www.obaony.com

The second Obao outpost, on Water Street, calls itself the “casual extension” of the flagship Obao in Midtown, which earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2011 and 2012. The Water Street location, like its predecessor, specializes in blending Thai and Vietnamese cuisine but at a pace fast enough for its Financial District patrons.  Start with the caramelized pork belly, move on to the massamun chicken or pho, add a side of sautéed bean sprouts or Chinese broccoli and end with a green tea panna cotta.

Closings:

Bolton’s – 95 Wall Street
Syms – 42 Trinity Place
Cafe Doppio – 55 Broad Street
Hidden Treasures – 32 Warren Street
Twin Café – 275 Greenwich Street

Meet a Lower Manhattan Business: Shake Shack

ShakeShack177

Shake Shack has opened in Lower Manhattan!

Shake Shack’s reputation was undeniably established following the success of its original Madison Square Park location.  Since then, quite a few locations have sprouted up throughout the city, and Danny Meyer has just opened his latest venture in Battery Park City.

The Shake Shack concept began as a modern day “roadside” burger stand serving delicious burgers, hot dogs, and frozen custard. The menu offers so much more to complement that famous burger topped with ShackSauce.  Shake Shack offers a vegetarian ‘shroom’ burger, a ‘concrete’ made with three layers of frozen custard, and ShackMeister Ale brewed in collaboration with Brooklyn Brewery.

It’s no surprise that Shake Shack’s popularity has swept New York, and now Lower Manhattan has its very own spot just down the block.
