Got a Prize-Winning Love Story?

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

A romantic dinner at a neighborhood restaurant. A walk along the Esplanade in Battery Park City. A blind date that led to a lifetime of happiness.

So many special moments can be captured in the one square mile that is Lower Manhattan.

So why not share the love – and be eligible to win a prize?

The Downtown Alliance proudly announces the Lower Manhattan Love Story, a chance to tell us how you fell in love in – or with – Lower Manhattan.

As Valentine’s Day approaches, we’d like to hear your story (in less than 500 words please). We’ve assembled a prestigious panel of Lower Manhattan judges who will pore over all contest entries and determine the winner.

What are we looking for? Personal accounts of how you met your life partner in Lower Manhattan, moved to the neighborhood because it was so special to you, fell head-over-heels in love with a park, view, or any other spot.

Our judges will be looking for the best “love” stories and choose a winner before Valentine’s Day.

Our panel: Toni Hinterstoisser, General Manager, Andaz Wall Street; Melissa Andreev, President, FiDi Association, Manager of La Maison du Chocolat; Christina Gambale, owner, Greenwich Jewelers; and, Sara Cancellaro, General Manager, Flowers of the World.

The contest ends on February 8, 2012. So send entries to ContactUs@DowntownNY.com  (subject line: Lower Manhattan Love Story) or Downtown Alliance, Att.: Lower Manhattan Love Story, 120 Broadway, Suite 3340, New York, NY, 10271. Entries must be received by midnight on February 8.

Because this is all about love, we have the ideal prize: a dinner for two at the upscale Wall & Water restaurant and a one-night weekend stay at the Andaz Wall Street hotel. Plus, Greenwich Jewelers is providing a $250 gift certificate to its store. And, the Downtown Express – our neighborhood’s premier local newspaper – will feature the winner in an upcoming issue.

Visit http://www.downtownny.com/lovestorycontest to learn the basic rules before you submit an entry.

We can’t wait to hear your story!

Geranium Lovers Occupy Bowling Green Park!

Thursday, October 13th, 2011

The rain held off yesterday and nearly 4,000 Bowling Green Park geraniums found themselves in the arms of thousands of Lower Manhattan residents and workers. In its fourth year, the wildly popular Adopt-a-Geranium event drew a constant stream of flower lovers, who waited patiently in a steadily moving line that wrapped around the park’s historic gates.

Adopt-A-Geranium Day 2011

Downtown Alliance President Elizabeth Berger and Council Member Margaret Chin pass out thousands of fresh geraniums.

Digging flowers up just as fast as they were given away, hardworking Downtown Alliance staff could barely keep up with demand. Luckily Downtown Alliance President Elizabeth Berger and Council Member Margaret Chin were at the helm, helping eager participants select the perfect plant. You can see some of the proud owners with their new flowers here.

Chef Maximo Lopez May

Andaz Wall Street’s Wall & Water Executive Chef Maximo Lopez May stands with his newly adopted geraniums.

Now that all of the geraniums have found loving homes, the Downtown Alliance is excited to prepare for its next Green Around Lower Manhattan event, Fall Community Planting Day, taking place on Saturday, October 22 from 10 AM to Noon. In preparation for spring, volunteers will help plant thousands of tulip bulbs in the same place the geraniums once proudly grew. What better way to occupy one of New York City’s oldest parks!

It’s NYC Restaurant Week at Wall & Water

Grilled stone fruit salad

It’s NYC Restaurant Week again—a great excuse to put on my roomy pants and head over to one of my favorite Lower Manhattan eateries!

This summer, my colleagues and I decided to pay a visit to Wall & Water in the Andaz Hotel.

We first visited the restaurant when the hotel opened about a year and a half ago and were impressed by their delicious Stone Fruit Salad.  The caramelized fruit sprinkled with goat cheese and drizzled with maple syrup, lemon and nuts is unique, interesting and like nothing else I had ever tasted before.  Once I saw that they were offering it on their menu for restaurant week, the decision to experience it again was obvious.  Not to mention, they had a steak entrée and their signature flourless chocolate cake on the menu as well!

So off we went.  Our waiter, Chris, was terrific!  He was friendly, attentive and knowledgeable—everything you’d expect and more.  He started us off with a complementary organic artichoke for the table with a delicious dipping sauce that wasn’t even part of the menu.

We then all shared and split our choices with each other.  All the fresh ingredients are produced locally—in fact, you might want to check out their farmers market on Wednesdays and Saturdays.  The open kitchen design and the casual sleek décor with couches and pillows make it seem like you are dining in a friend’s stylish apartment instead of a hotel restaurant.

Chef Maximo Lopez May has even held monthly cooking classes, so if I really wanted to learn how to make his delicious food, I could.  But for only $24.07 and no need to get my hands dirty, I think I’ll stick with the restaurant week menu for now!

Welcome back to Mess Around Downtown!

What do you get when you combine cigars, Vietnamese sandwiches, a craftsman, and a sweet new hotel room with a classy bar in the lobby? Sounds like one raucous night spent on the streets of Lower Manhattan to me. But really, it’s just the additions I’ve made this week to the Downtown Directory. If you see any new retailers or changes to existing retailers, please do not hesitate to email me at tre@downtownny.com.
