to do

Welcome back to Mess Around Downtown!

The Mess Around Downtown Summer To Do List:

1) See a movie on the Elevated Acre. This 4 week series kicks off on July 29th with Woody Allen’s Broadway Danny Rose. Check the schedule here. I’m sad I’ll be out of town when The Muppets Take Manhattan to close out the season.

2) Tour the Gold Vault under the Federal Reserve. This one is for when it’s too hot to play outside. Reserve your tour here.

3) Learn to sail at Manhattan Sailing School based out of the North Cove in BPC.

4) EAT here on July 8th.

5) Have an adult beverage at MacMenamin’s Irish Pub, Water Taxi Beach & Beer Garden, and Fresh Salt all in one night. Why? To celebrate the fact that they were all featured as summer drinking establishments this week in Time Out New York. MacMenamin’s and Water Taxi for their outdoor vibes and Fresh Salt for being dog friendly. So, why not? Anybody have a dog I can borrow?

Check out the River to River Festival guide and let me know what I should add to my list.  Read on for new establishments that opened these past couple of weeks. You can find anything you need with our handy Downtown Directory. Don’t be afraid to email me at tre@downtownny.com. Thanks.

Subway1 World Trade Center: currently sitting on the 27th floor and rising every couple of weeks

Ironworkers get very hungry and this article explains it all. Fascinating, I say.

——————–

Arome Cafe - 5 Dey Street: 212-786-3336

Someone has to feed all those Century 21 shoppers and Arome seems to have it covered. The crowds are lining up for their salad bar, pizza station, endless sandwiches and fruit smoothies. Plenty of seating for tired legs and big windows for people watching.

————————

Vietnamese Sandwiches - 164 Pearl Street: 212-952-1699

The name says it all people. The menu consists of eight sandwiches to choose from all priced at $6. They close when they run out of fresh baguettes for the day. Usually around 4:00. With Baoguette on Maiden Lane and Mangez Avec Moi on West Broadway also serving up these sandwiches, is it possible we have a Banh Mi showdown happening Downtown? Oh what a tasty Downtown showdown it is.

22 Thai Cuisine- 22 Maiden Lane: 212-766-0988

Serving up all your Thai favorites. From curries to coconut soup, 22 Thai has you covered. This stretch of Maiden Lane between Broadway and Nassau has turned into an ethnic foodie paradise with Vietnamese, Middle Eastern, Japanese, Chinese and Italian restaurants, all setting up shop in the last couple of years.

Chambers Beauty Spa -160 Chambers Street: 212-608-2818

Manicures, pedicures, waxing, threading, facials, massages, hot stones, eyelash extensions, eyebrow tinting, ear candle therapy and, yes, sinus cavity cleanses.

Mildred Elley College25 Broadway, 16th floor: 212-380-9004

March Mess Around Downtown Madness

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

Welcome back to Mess Around Downtown!

The days of it being completely acceptable to gamble in the office and come back from lunch with a bit of a buzz are upon us Downtowners. College ballers all across the country are playing their hearts out and The Mess Around is here to give you the scoop on where to watch these mad hoops. Below are Downtown sports bars where you can catch the action and find some deals. Don’t be afraid to email me at tre@downtownny.com to let me know about new retailers or changes to existing retailers. Thanks.

————————

1834 Bar & Burger – 62 Pearl Street: 212-248-4848

Go downstairs at 1834 where the flatscreens are plentiful and the beer flows like wine. Chef Diane Dimeo (winner of Food Network’s ”Chopped”) has created a new mouth watering burger menu. This newly redesigned space gave me the feeling that I was in an old-school burgeria fused with an upscale man cave. It’s a good thing, trust me. They’re celebrating March Madness with a $5 burger and beer combo special, $4 drafts and 2 for 1 deals. Check it.

————————

85 West Sports Lounge85 West Street: 212-266-6128

Feeling Classy? You need to get down to the business of rooting for your team from the comfort of a leather sofa at this upscale sports watching facility. Sip on a $5 draft of Bud Light or Bass when the tournament is on. But wait, that draft is only $4 if you’re sporting your college team’s gear. Now we’re talking. They’ll feature daily food specials throughout the tournament as well.

———————–

The Beekman Pub15 Beekman Street: 212-732-7333

Plenty of B-ball and large screen televisions to go around for everyone at this friendly Irish pub. The locals love this joint and there is never a shortage of  deals to be had. Stop in during any game at any time for happy hour prices.

———————

Beckett’s - 81 Pearl Street: 212-269-1001

This is the place to watch sports on Stone Street. If you disagree with me, you are more than welcome to take it up with one of their 9 foot televisions. They also have twenty-six 50 inch screens. Yes, it’s for real and $5 Stella Artois is real too.

———————–

Liam’s Pub – 90 Fulton Street: 646-241-9105

This joint used to be called Exchange and is now under new ownership. They love soccer here but are tuning their Direct TV dishes to every single NCAA tournament game. While you’re watching: play darts, beer pong, and pool. Their menu is in the process of being upgraded, but if you ask nicely they may have some leftover corned beef and cabbage from yesterday for you.

———————-

Warren 77 – 77 Warren Street: 212-277-8994

This is a sports bar owned by a sports star. They’ll only be playing the tournament games that will be on CBS (which is most of them), but I forgive them because their mac n’ cheese is addictive and I feel cool when I’m in here. You can check their TV events schedule here.

Mess Around Downtown: February 18, 2010

Welcome back to Mess Around Downtown!

Winter can’t stop me from walking my beat, and it sure didn’t stop new retailers from opening over the past few weeks. This edition of Mess Around will help you: find a place to live Downtown, get your beach body (and soul) on, drink the freshest cup of coffee you’re going to find in Lower Manhattan, try a new burger, and eat fresh. If you see any new retailers, or changes to existing retailers, please do not hesitate to e-mail me at tre@downtownny.com and let me know.

————————

New York Residence - 63 Wall Street: 212-840-1616

If you’re thinking of moving to Lower Manhattan (as many are these days) you must let New York Residence help you find your next abode. They are the only residential real estate business in the Wall Street area with a retail storefront. Their space is welcoming, and I recommend you stop by to meet their Downtown Agents and surf their Macs for your next home.

————————

SoulCycle – 103 Warren Street: 212-406-1300

Do you like Spinning but hate the former drill sergeant your gym hired to yell in your face while you try to workout in a healthful and focused way? If so, SoulCycle is for you. Combining strength and cardio training while tending to the entire self is their specialty. No yelling. They built a special studio that has resistance bands anchored to a sliding track above your bike for their one-of-a-kind class. It’s pay by the class, no memberships, so check their schedule online to learn more and see what works for you.

————————-

Beta Coffee - 50 Fulton Street: 212-300-4311

Stop by this new little caffeine fixation station for a seriously fresh cup of joe. Every individual cup is ground and french pressed just for you. The result was a really clean and uplifting body of flavor that would be good on its own, for an afternoon pick me up, or after a meal.

————————

1834 Bar & Burger – 62 Pearl Street: 212-248-4848

Remember Perle? The french restaurant that used to be in this space? Well, Perle is now 1834 Bar & Burger. Everything looks the same as it did before and the same people still own it. They just changed their cuisine and transformed their menu to an American specialty burger theme. Apparently hungry Wall Streeters prefer their meat ground and grilled rather than bound and braised.

————————

Subway111 Broadway: 212-227-6323

Eat Fresh at the newest Subway to join the neighborhood.
