Manhattan Plant Design Experts - 250 Front Street: 212-367-9667

After twenty years of designing and caring for the plants and flowers of the commercial and corporate NYC communities, these green thumbed experts have opened a showroom to the public. Help them help you by stopping by and finding out what plant type you are. I’m a Ficus. Hang out with their bird, Lucas, while you browse their ever evolving unique plant and flower selection. Use their knowledge to help you design your interior and exterior plantscapes for good spring feelings.

Lei Restaurant – 25 Peck Slip: 212-766-5288

Peck Slip is lighting it up these days. This shiny new Asian fusion joint is offering Malysian, Thai and Vietnamese cuisine. The menu has Malaysian style Pad Thai, seafood tom yum soup, dumplings, and banh mi. I’ll be eating here soon and the bar will be open until 4am.

———————–

H&R Block - 5 Hanover Square: 212-785-1216

If you are looking for the H&R Block that used to reside at 30 Broad Street, this is their new home. Taxes. You gotta do your taxes.

Mess Around Downtown: February 25, 2010

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Fika

Welcome back to Mess Around Downtown!

This week’s additions to the Downtown Directory help confirm my theory that a steady movement of food artisans and craftspeople are making their way to Lower Manhattan. Perhaps it’s the economy, or maybe foodies just like to be surrounded by water… I don’t know. But I do know that the two restaurants that opened this week have once again annihilated any negative connotations about the quality of food down here. Those days are gone Downtowners, and don’t let anybody tell you otherwise.

Alright, enough already. My mouth is watering just thinking about the food I’m going to tell you about. Don’t be afraid to e-mail me at tre@downtownny.com to let me know about new retailers and changes to existing ones. Thank you and enjoy.

————————

Fika Espresso Bar - 66 Pearl Street: phone # coming soon

Fika!  It’s a Swedish verb that means “to take a coffee break”. But don’t let the name fool you. While the coffee is of world class quality ( imported from Sweden’s oldest and most trusted roaster), the chocolate and food are well crafted and delectably, uhm, Swedish. Where do I begin? Oh yes, they were a best in show winner at the 2009 Chocolate Show. While you’re munching on one of their famous hand-rolled truffles feel free to watch their master chocolatiere create his edible masterpieces in the back of their space.

Enough about the sweets though, lets talk savory. The chef ’s former gig was heading up the kitchen at the Swedish Consolate. So it shouldn’t surprise you that they are curing their own gravlax and rolling out beautiful meatballs. They’re of the Swedish varietal of course. Stop in for a Swedish style burger with red beets and capers or a Swedish Caesar salad with involves gruyere cheese. All this and they cater too. Fika indeed!

————————

Itsa Pizza – 20 John Street: 212-964-0999, the Web site will be up next week. Please check back.

I can’t resist writing the following sentence. Itsa Pizza isa so mucha mora. Yes, they do make all of their pizza by hand, and it’s in competition for the best slice Downtown, but with over 30 years of experience, Chef Billy Wilkins is bringing much more to this table. The instant the homemade quattro formaggio risotto ball that Wilkins placed in front of me hit my taste buds, I knew I was experiencing a whole new level of Downtown Eats.  And just when I thought my endorphin levels had peaked I took a bite of one of the Russian meat pies piled high behind the glass. It was like a spicy and doughy hug for my mouth.

I’m going to leave it at that. Eat here.

———————–

Apple Bank for Savings - 10 Hanover Square: phone numbers not published

This New York bank opened its second Downtown location this week.  They’ve been doing business in NYC since 1863 and it looks like they’re doing pretty well in this economy. Here is a link with a bunch of banker language I don’t understand to prove it.

————————

Kunal Grocery Inc. – 27 Park Place: 212-608-1110

The fire that damaged this space last year didn’t stop the friendly new proprietors of Kunal Grocery from taking it on. You will never know that this space had severe smoke damage as you purchase your lotto tickets, beer, cigs, and random foods. Stop by to say hello and scratch off an instant winner.

————————

Fire Alert

Ryan Maguire’s at 28 Cliff Street is closed until further notice due to a fire that damaged their business on the morning of February 24th. I wish them a speedy recovery.

Mess Around Downtown: February 18, 2010

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

Sphinz for Web

Welcome back to Mess Around Downtown!

Winter can’t stop me from walking my beat, and it sure didn’t stop new retailers from opening over the past few weeks. This edition of Mess Around will help you: find a place to live Downtown, get your beach body (and soul) on, drink the freshest cup of coffee you’re going to find in Lower Manhattan, try a new burger, and eat fresh. If you see any new retailers, or changes to existing retailers, please do not hesitate to e-mail me at tre@downtownny.com and let me know.

————————

New York Residence - 63 Wall Street: 212-840-1616

If you’re thinking of moving to Lower Manhattan (as many are these days) you must let New York Residence help you find your next abode. They are the only residential real estate business in the Wall Street area with a retail storefront. Their space is welcoming, and I recommend you stop by to meet their Downtown Agents and surf their Macs for your next home.

————————

SoulCycle – 103 Warren Street: 212-406-1300

Do you like Spinning but hate the former drill sergeant your gym hired to yell in your face while you try to workout in a healthful and focused way? If so, SoulCycle is for you. Combining strength and cardio training while tending to the entire self is their specialty. No yelling. They built a special studio that has resistance bands anchored to a sliding track above your bike for their one-of-a-kind class. It’s pay by the class, no memberships, so check their schedule online to learn more and see what works for you.

————————-

Beta Coffee - 50 Fulton Street: 212-300-4311

Stop by this new little caffeine fixation station for a seriously fresh cup of joe. Every individual cup is ground and french pressed just for you. The result was a really clean and uplifting body of flavor that would be good on its own, for an afternoon pick me up, or after a meal.

————————

1834 Bar & Burger – 62 Pearl Street: 212-248-4848

Remember Perle? The french restaurant that used to be in this space? Well, Perle is now 1834 Bar & Burger. Everything looks the same as it did before and the same people still own it. They just changed their cuisine and transformed their menu to an American specialty burger theme. Apparently hungry Wall Streeters prefer their meat ground and grilled rather than bound and braised.

————————

Subway111 Broadway: 212-227-6323

Eat Fresh at the newest Subway to join the neighborhood.

Vacancy Alert

Papoo’s Italian Cuisine at 55 Broadway has closed.

Mess Around Downtown: Off The Beaten Path

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

hike

Welcome back to Mess Around Downtown!

People are always trying to tell me, The Mess, that there is nowhere to eat down here. After a momentous pause, when my empathy for this person kicks in, I inform them that there are over 100 full service dining restaurants and almost 350 casual eating spots to choose from within the square mile that is Lower Manhattan. So, in order to further advance my ongoing effort to inform and educate the appetites of my fellow Downtowners, I’m going to talk about five places that are just a bit off the beaten path of the central Downtown lunch circuit. Perhaps you want to break the monotony of going to the same lunch cart four times a week or are a bit tired of the assembly line made sandwiches at your usual joint. Maybe you just forgot your brown bag today.

Well, if you are willing and interested in change then read on Downtowner, read on. You may have to walk a bit farther and even get a little lost along the way to experience some newness, but that sounds like a good time to me. And, oh yeah, please feel free to use my comment space below to post your favorite places to eat and shop down here.  What secret deals are out there that I don’t know about? Who has the best burger or slice of pizza? Where can I find the freshest and cheapest salad? Comment, disagree with me, share your thoughts, argue amongst yourselves, inform me.  Below, in no particular order, are five places where you should eat.

———————–

Sandwich House - 17 Ann Street - 212-566-6886

When you walk into Sandwich House, located next to Theatre Alley, you won’t be impressed by its decor. But unless you’re there to critique its interior design, it won’t matter because the quality of the ingredients and the friendly service more than make up for the lack of spacial flow. This aptly named Italian sandwich shop is a favorite little secret among the workers and locals in this sector of Lower Manhattan. Homemade soups, fresh bread, glorious Italian meats and cheeses, and choice greens take the menu to the next level. Don’t be scared by the $8 price tag for a sandwich. They are a generous mom-and-pop with weekly and daily specials. I recommend going for the soup, half a sandwich, and a drink for $10.

————————

Pan Latin Cafe400 Chambers Street – 212-571-3860

Walk as far West on Chambers Street as you can without falling into the Hudson and you’ll be at Pan Latin. This is a peaceful location with a beautiful view to enjoy your gnoshing. This place feels like a home when you walk in. It’s bit cluttered with fruit and baking ingredients scattered amongst an array of stools, tables and art; it feels like a family lives here. A family that knows how to cook. They serve breakfast all day and everything is made from scratch. I love their signature ”Media Noche” sandwich bread and they may have the best Cuban sandwich in the city. I have to give a special mention to their “Guava Cream Cheese Bread Pudding”. Out of control I say I say.

————————

Inatteso Cafe - 38 West Street – 212-267-7000

A bit North of The Ritz in Battery Park City and just up the block from its cousin, Inatteso Pizza Bar, sits this reliable, panini-pressing cafe. Cross the West Side Highway for a fried green tomato with mozzarella and pesto panini. You’ll be greeted and tempted by the cakes and pies that line the glass case next to the register. If you live in BPC, stop here for your eggs, milk, and other supplies to get you through until that next Fresh Direct delivery arrives.

————————

Cowgirl Sea-Horse259 Front Street – 212-608-7873

Put on your favorite cowboy boots (with a snorkel to match) and you’ll fit right in with the funky decor that goes along with Cowgirl Sea-Horse’s nautically Southwestern themed menu.  Walk as far northeast on Front as you can without merging onto the Brooklyn Bridge and you will be in fried seafood heaven. Bring your appetite for hearty portions of fish tacos, nachos, and oyster po’ boys. The locals that hang here love that the Seaport tourists don’t stray over this way too often. Enjoy a frozen margarita or a good ol’ fashioned can of beer at the most neighborhoody feeling happy hour around. And it’s kid-friendly and open for weekend brunching. I dare you to have the ice cream baked potato for dessert. In fact, I triple dog dare you.

———————–

The Grotto69 New Street – 212-809-6991

I had to include The Grotto on this list because the people in my office hold it in such high regard. It’s tucked into a lower-level space (watch your head on the way down) on the construction-laden and delivery truck-filled New Street. The Grotto has been around for years and it’s because they make good food and have good prices. Try an eggplant and sundried tomato wrap, the festive fiesta salad, or treat yourself to a whole bacon and jalepeno pizza. Everyone seems to know each other in this place and the daily specials have brought back the regulars for years.

Mess Around Downtown: February 2, 2010

Monday, February 1st, 2010

Welcome back to Mess Around Downtown!

Hello to all of my fellow Downtowners out there in blogland.  Is it me, or is the food getting better and better down here? More and more options keep popping up on streets all over Lower Manhattan for both lunch and dinner. Just a few days ago  I, along with some of my fabulous foodie co-workers, had the pleasure of lunching at SHO Shaun Hergatt in honor of Restaurant Week. The experience was certainly a five star delight for my sensory system. But it’s not just high falutin’ cuisine that’s showing up in droves.  Common folk need food too. And that’s why joints like Baoguette on Maiden Lane and the hip new Bon Chon Chicken on John Street are doing our common folk palates proud. Below are the additions and changes I’ve made to the Downtown Directory this past week. If you see any new retailers or changes to existing retailers, please do not hesitate to e-mail me at tre@downtownny.com and let me know.

————————

Bon Chon Chicken – 104 John Street: 646-682-7747

The Korean style fried chicken at this place is so tasty and crispy that my co-worker and I have written and choreographed a theme song and dance that is done every time we even think about eating it. Word to the wise, if you’re in a hurry, call ahead to order. They make each batch individually and lunch time can get backed up. If you’re not in a hurry, go in, hang at the bar, and drink a beer while you wait. It’s worth it.

————————

City Blossoms – 62 Trinity Place: 212-346-0756

This is the second Downtown location for City Blossoms. Their other location is at 2 Washington Street. City Blossoms specializes in the art of floral arranging European-style. Click around their site to find out how they can teach you at their European School of Floral Design.  Hire City Blossoms for your daily arrangements, wedding, corporate account or landscaping.

————————-

Wall & Water - 75 Wall Street: 212-590-1234

Hungry for some locally grown Hudson Valley farmers market fare, cooked and served in a simple and elegant setting? Stop by the Andaz’s new restaurant for a tasty meal inspired by the flavors and ingredients of the Hudson Valley. Chef Maximo Lopez May is cooking up breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day of the week. Who wouldn’t want to eat a meal cooked by a guy named Maximo? Make a reservation for up to 12 and enjoy dishes like braised veal cheeks, Hudson Valley duck salami, smoked venison, and prune ice cream. Check this out for their menu and pics.

————————

TSC Training Academy – 2 Cortlandt Street, 2nd Floor:718-878-1076

Get your OSHA certifications here. This new TSC Downtown location is conveniently located near the WTC site. You can get your 10 hour OSHA Construction Safety Training and your 4 hour User Supported Scaffold Training here. Check out their Web site to register and see their class schedule.

Mess Around Downtown: January 18, 2010

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Welcome back to Mess Around Downtown!

What do you get when you combine cigars, Vietnamese sandwiches, a craftsman, and a sweet new hotel room with a classy bar in the lobby? Sounds like one raucous night spent on the streets of Lower Manhattan to me. But really, it’s just the additions I’ve made this week to the Downtown Directory. If you see any new retailers or changes to existing retailers, please do not hesitate to email me at tre@downtownny.com.

———————————–

Baoguette – 9 Maiden Lane: 212-233-3400,         www.baoguette.com

Arguably the best Bahn Mi in NYC. Definitely the hottest little food shop to hit Downtown this year. Judging from the line at lunch, people are digging it.

———————————–

Cigar Landing – 25 Peck Slip: 212-766-1588

If you find yourself around the Seaport after dining at one of the many awesome restaurants on Front Street or you are just craving a nice smoke at lunch time, check out this new little shop for a fine hand rolled to ease your lungs’ desire. Open until 10pm.

———————————–

An American Craftsman - 10 FultonStreet: 212-509-0591, www.anamericancraftsman.com

This newest additon to the South Street Seaport Mall serves as a gallery for over 500 American artists and craftspeople putting their work up for sale through An American Craftsman. Shop here for handcrafted glass work for your home, woodwork, and jewelry.

———————————–

Andaz Wall Street – 75 Wall Street: 212-590-1234,                       www.andaz.com

Now taking reservations for it’s opening night on January 18th. If I didn’t live here and was visiting this week, I’d stay here. I would love to wake up in one of these big rooms surrounded by sophisticated and sleek design.

———————————–

Bar Seven Five – 75 Wall Street: 212-590-1234

This is the Andaz’s bar that is already getting high marks from the blogosphere. It also opens to the public on the 18th of January, and from the pictures I’ve seen, I just want to be in this space sipping on a Perfect Pearl Manhattan made by one of their pro Mixologists.

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

Welcome back to Mess Around Downtown!

Well downtowners, I hope you are using the Downtown Directory to help you with all of your Holiday needs and desires. This week I have five new retailers who have decided to make Downtown their home. Three new restaurants, a yoga studio, and yet another bank join the ever growing list of places to eat, exercise, and do business. If you see any new retailers or changes to existing retailers, please do not hesitate to email me at tre@downtownny.com.

New Field Yoga – 27 Cliff Street: 212-666-3700, www.newfieldyoga.com

New Field Yoga is a multi-traditional yoga studio in the fast growing residential neighborhood of the Financial District. The studio offers over 40 classes a week. They feature styles ranging from Vinyasa, Anusara, Hatha, and more. New Field Yoga also offers programs geared towards young famlies, including Music Together classes, kids’ yoga, and Mommy and Me. Check out their website to see the schedule and learn about their teachers.

———————————–

This cozy new Indian restaurant specializes in both Northern and Southern Indian Cuisine. Head here for 50% off of their Northern Indian menu at lunch time. Take a date after work for some Mango or Coconut Chutney, Breads from Tandoor, or perhaps some baby Goat Chilli. Yum.

———————————–

Open Door Gastropub - 110 John Street: 212-608-0200, www.opendoornyc.com

Be hungry when you try this newest addition to John Street. Burgers galore and Duck Sliders are but a mere beginning to the adventures your palate can take here. The management of this new restaurant and pub did a nice job renovating this huge space. Definitely the tallest and longest bar I have come across Downtown. Opened yesterday for lunch and dinner.

———————————–

Goodburger – 101 Maiden Lane: 212-797-1700, www.goodburgerny.com

This NYC chain has opened its fifth store this week, and it just happens to be in Lower Manhattan. They are proud to be a Green Certified restaurant. And don’t worry veggies, they have plenty of salads and portobello burgers to choose from. Check out their website for delivery ordering info.

Mess Around Downtown: The Vault Edition

Friday, December 4th, 2009

VaultDoor
Did you know that the largest gold vault in the world lies beneath the Federal Reserve in Lower Manhattan? 540,000 gold bars live below the streets of Manhattan. In fact, Lower Manhattan has been the financial capital of the world for a long time.  So, what could 12 inch thick steel, steak, wine and art possibly have in common? Well, at one time there were even more banks down here than there are now. As the world has become more global and banks have vacated their buildings, they had no choice but to clear out their cash and leave the incredible vaults where they stored their wealth behind.  I thought you might like to know how four of these awesome vault spaces have been reinvented, recreated and restored to everything from rehearsal spaces to steak serving restaurants.

Lower Manhattan Cultural Council: Swing Space - 14 Wall Street

This vault has been transformed into a rehearsal space for artists and arts organizations that have been rewarded a grant to create new work. Whatever brings more art Downtown is good.  Artists, learn how to apply for a grant yourself.  Art lovers, check out their site to view the work of past and present artists that have utilized this great opportunity, and find out what to see next.

Bobby Van’s Steakhouse and Grill – 25 Broad Street

Head downstairs to this huge, beautiful space that was the original J.P. Morgan Trust vault.  Bobby Van’s did an excellent job preserving the original integrity of this vault. The huge circular doors are still in tact and the exterior walls still have the original safe deposit boxes in place.  Eat here if you’re looking for an interesting setting to go along with a critically acclaimed steak and wine for lunch or dinner.

Trinity Place -  115 Broadway

When you walk inside this restaurant you are immediately greeted by an awesome vault door.  It is apparent that the space was designed to work with the beauty of the vault, rather than trying to cover it up.  It took nine months to cut through the steel of the vault to get the specific aesthetic they were going for.  The result is visually pleasing.  They also utilized the old vault elevator by turning it into their wine cellar.  If you’ve been looking to try the fantastic food here but haven’t had the chance, let this be your new motive.

The Capital Grille – 120 Broadway

Rent this vault for your next private party and you’ll be entering a large dining room through a huge circular steel door.  Word on the street is that steak and wine tastes better when consumed in a vault.

Do you know of any other vaults Downtown that are being used for something other than to secure money and gold?  If so, please do not hesitate to e-mail me at tre@downtownny.com

Mess Around Downtown: November 25, 2009

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

Welcome back to Mess Around Downtown!

Happy Thanksgiving Downtowners. I figure that after feasting tomorrow you will be ready to shop for deals, drink some fine spirits, and treat yourself to a pedicure. And you may need a new dry cleaner to get that fresh gravy stain out of your favorite sweater. Below you will find new retailers to meet all of your Black Friday needs. If you see any new retailers or changes to existing retailers, please do not hesitate to email me at tre@downtownny.com. Thanks and Happy Turkey Day!

———————————–

Vintry Wine & Whiskey – 57 Stone Street: 212-480-9800, www.vintrynyc.com

Just when you thought Stone Street could not get any better, this place moves in. The aptly named Vintry, nestled into a cozy historic space, specializes in, you guessed it, wine and whiskey. Knowledgable bartenders can point you to the right scotch or wine for your palate on their extensive menu. And their small plate menu is impressive with items like lobster stuffed mushrooms, caviar, smoked salmon knishes, cured meats, and desserts.

———————————–

The Iron Horse – 32 Cliff Street: 646-546-5426, www.ironhorsenyc.com

I got the sense when I visited this new bar off of Fulton street that this horse could not be tamed. Loud music, good people, a simple grill menu, and a pool table are the staples of this fantastically raucous bar. The bartender assured me that no matter what time of day or how bad the stock market is, there is always good times a to be had at The Iron Horse.

———————————–

Lot-Less Closeouts – 95 Fulton Street: 212-566-8504

This gigantic discount store opened its doors yesterday where the Strand used to live. Where else in Lower Manhattan can you find holiday decorations, Isotoners, Triscuits, weekly planners, and cheap designer dress shoes under the same roof? Nowhere, that’s where. I was impressed by the prices in here for some nice stuff.

———————————–

Cliff Street Cleaners – 15 Cliff Street: 212-264-4400, www.cliffcleaners.com

Opened last week between Fulton and John Streets. This family owned and operated business offers free pick up and delivery, custom tailoring and alterations, and will even wash and fold your laundry.

———————————–

Spring Nail Spa N.Y. – 119 Fulton Street: 212-766-8808

After cooking all day tomorrow, you should treat yourself to a pedicure and a massage at this fine new establishment. They also offer manicures, waxing, and threading services. Managed by a friendly owner and employees excited to be a part of the competitive nail spa scene down here.

Mess Around Downtown: November 18, 2009

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

DowntownDirectoryWelcome back to Mess Around Downtown!

Hello Downtowners. First off I’d like to remind you to use the Downtown Directory. It is an excellent tool to decide what to eat, find where to hang out, look for a place to volunteer, discover where community organizations reside and plan to do whatever it is you do Downtown. Use it!

Aaah yes, Downtown. Where businesses come to be fruitful and multiply. People are hungry down here from working hard all day. That’s why this week’s edition of Mess Around features existing places to eat that have opened up another store Downtown. These retailers are working for you, the Downtowner, shortening your walk to your favorite place.

Below are the changes I’ve come across this past week. If you see any new retailers or any changes to existing retailers, please email me at tre@downtownny.com. Thanks!

———————————–

This is the second Taz to open in Lower Manhattan. The other Taz is at 84 William Street. Open for Breakfast with plenty of healthy options like Greek omelettes for $3.95.  For lunch create your own salad, have some pizza or choose from an abundance of sandwiches. They cater too.

———————————–

Pret A Manger – 101 Maiden Lane: 646-810-2425, www.pret.com

This marks the arrival of Pret #3 to Downtown. So, this is excellent news if you’re a Pret fan and don’t have time to get to the other locations at 60 Broad Street or 50 Broadway. Opened last week with all of the fresh made goodness that Pret brings to the table.

———————————–
