Winter’s Last Gasp

Friday, March 8th, 2013

Rockefeller Park was blanketed Friday morning with several inches of soft, wet snow in one of winter’s last white storms. The usually bustling park was quiet, and the wet flakes that formed heaps on its lawns and pathways were disturbed only by the occasional jogger brave enough, or dedicated enough, to run through.

Zuccotti Park has had quite a history.  Formerly called Liberty Plaza Park, it was built in 1968 in return for a height bonus for an adjacent building at the time of its construction and was one of the few open spaces with tables and seats in the Financial District. It was renamed Zuccotti Park in honor of John E. Zuccotti, Director/Co-Chairman of Brookfield Properties.

In 2001, in the midst of September 11th, the park was used as a staging area for recovery efforts.  In 2011 it became campgrounds and home-base for the “Occupy Wall Street” protest.

Now, it is home to pigeons and passersby and set all aglow for the holiday season!

Picture Lower Manhattan: Holiday Shopping

Wednesday, December 19th, 2012

When you live a busy life in NYC, sometimes it’s hard to get all of your holiday shopping done in time.  Being a last minute holiday shopper, places like Century 21, Trinity Place Department Store and TJ Maxx are a dream come true in getting all of my shopping done in one (maybe two) stops.  There’s also the Pier 17 mall at the South Street Seaport.

The best part is, I don’t have to go too far after work because they are all right here in Lower Manhattan!

Picture Lower Manhattan: Equitable Building Spreads Holiday Cheer

Tuesday, December 11th, 2012

This National Historic Landmark owned by Silverstein Properties, and home to the Downtown Alliance, is all dressed up and ringing in the holiday spirit with a beautiful wreath above its main entrance and a large decorated tree in its lobby – which also means that their annual toy drive has begun.

Every year, 120 Broadway has a toy drive on behalf of the Hamilton-Madison House – collecting new toys under the lobby holiday tree from people who work in the building, and donating them to less-fortunate children just in time for the holidays.  This year, they are also conducting a food drive for City Harvest and  a coat drive for New York Cares to benefit those who were affected by Hurricane Sandy.

Picture Lower Manhattan: New York Stock Exchange Tree Lighting Ceremony

Wednesday, December 5th, 2012

Tuesday evening, people gathered once again for the 89th Annual New York Stock Exchange Tree Lighting Ceremony – with live performances, hot beverages and cookies!

The lighting has been a tradition since 1923. This year’s tree is a Norway Spruce hailing from Newburgh, N.Y. and stands 45 feet high and 35 feet wide.  The tree is adorned with 3,500 white LED lights, 1,000 multi-colored balls (with the NYSE Euronext logo printed on them) and a 6 foot star on top – all supported on an 8 foot by 10 foot base fashioned as a gold box.

Picture Lower Manhattan: The Nutcracker

Friday, November 30th, 2012

Parents, children and employees at the World Financial Center enjoyed a performance on Wednesday of Keith Michael’s The Nutcracker by the New York Theatre Ballet. The performance was condensed into a child-friendly, one-hour format and held in the Winter Garden under a brilliant umbrella of 50,000 bright white lights which adorned the atrium’s palm trees.

Picture Lower Manhattan: Shooting Stars Are Back To Light Up the Night Sky

Tuesday, November 27th, 2012

A view down Nassau Street

While shopping in Lower Manhattan this holiday season, be sure to look to the skies and make a wish upon one of the 199 shooting stars in Lower Manhattan.

For the 17th year in a row, the Downtown Alliance has installed holiday lights - stringing up shooting stars and star clusters throughout the district -  to brighten up the neighborhood for the holidays until the first week in January.

Picture Lower Manhattan: Trinity Church Bell Tower

Friday, September 14th, 2012

Recently, while exploring our photo archives for a special project, I came across some great photos that I thought were worth sharing.

The photos above were taken within the bell tower of Trinity Church – which we received a quick tour of during a Wi-Fi installation earlier this year.

The tower currently contains 23 change-ringing bells (12 of which were installed in 2006) that range from 600 to 2,400 pounds. Public ringing of the bells takes place before and after Trinity’s Sunday service, as well as on special occasions – such as 9/11 commemorations, weddings and ticker-tape parades.

This past June, students from the local  Leadership and Public Service High School rang the bells during their graduation ceremony at Trinity Church as part of a bell-ringing course they received throughout the school year that was developed in conjunction with Trinity’s All Our Children initiative – partnering churches with public schools.

Picture Lower Manhattan: Spring into Summer

Wednesday, June 20th, 2012

Ah, the warm weather is just toasting Lower Manhattan today – and tomorrow. So as Spring headed into Summer, we headed out to explore the area and see how folks were coping. Well, we encountered a lot of childish fun at the fountain at Battery Bosque Park.

So, for your enjoyment – and to help you think cool thoughts today – we are sharing with you our favorite photos (and all taken with the blessing of their parents nearby). Thanks to our ace photographer, Marla S. Maritzer!

Enjoy.
