Growler

Welcome back to Owen for Business!  I’m Michael Owen, and this will be the final installment of Owen for Business.  I’m leaving the Alliance to take a new position, but I’ll still be working in the neighborhood so I’ll be able to visit all the great retail spots I’ve visited and discussed over the past year.  If you see any new retailers or changes to existing retailers, please email us at tre@downtownny.com. Thanks!

The Growler – 15 South William Street, 917-409-0251 (Additional entrance on Stone Street)

The Growler is a new pub dedicated to dogs, the owners who love them, and of course – great beer.  While the official opening won’t be for a few weeks, The Growler opens every day at 5 PM to allow doggie lovers to sip a refreshing brew and get a taste of what will soon become their favorite local pub.  The interior is decorated with old photographs of dogs, and regulars who claim a stool and mug as their own will eventually be eligible to obtain a Growler Tag, to reap all the benefits of “regular” status.

Medhattan Immediate Medical Care - 106 Liberty Street, 855-782-8637

The medical staff of Medhattan all have a background in emergency medical care.  They felt that emergency room visits were often unnecessary, too costly, and patients needed a better option.  With the leadership of Doctor Leslie Miller, that vision has become a reality.  Medhattan patients receive expert care in an inviting and warm office, and the wait is never more than 15 minutes.

Samsara Café - 277 Water Street, 212-444-9443

The much-anticipated Samsara Café has finally opened.  Executive Chef Joshua Elliott’s menu includes prosciutto and fig flatbread, sweet and spicy house-made sausage, seared pork tenderloin and a variety of other succulent dishes with an international flair.

Spruce Street School (PS 397) – 12 Spruce Street, 212-266-4800

The Spruce Street School opened at the base of the 76-story Gehry tower this fall.  PS 397 is dedicated to educating pre-K to second graders and their mission is to “transform the youngest members of our local community into active members of our global community.”

Athea - 7 Hanover Square , 212-825-0775

Mark Wilkinson Furniture has transformed into Athea Kitchens and Baths.  If you love to cook, it doesn’t get much better than designing and remodeling your very own kitchen.

ONEARTspaceBLOG

Welcome back to Owen for Business!  I’m Michael Owen, and in this issue of Owen for Business we’ll highlight some nearby inviting spaces that will help you get away for a while.  If you see any new retailers or changes to existing retailers, please email me at tre@downtownny.com. Thanks!

One Art Space - 23 Warren Street, 646-559-0535

Owner and Director Dan Giella ‘s dreams of opening his own art gallery have come to fruition. One Art Space has recently opened inside the arcaded entrance at 23 Warren Street, giving Lower Manhattan a wonderful new addition.  Artist Blake Shirley’s work is currently on display, which will be followed by Daniel Belardinelli’s Vital Signs exhibit that opens September 8th.

In addition to the impressive works of art, you may also notice the quirky real estate ads around the corner from the gallery.  It’s no surprise that the pulp-esque ads are also designed by the artistic troupe at One Art Space.

Silver Lining – 75 Murray, 212-513-1234

Joseph Schwartz and Vito Dieterle have transformed the basement of the Bogardus Mansion into Silver Lining, a stylish cocktail bar that also serves live jazz.  Dieterle, a saxophonist and bartender,  has decorated the exposed brick walls with his family’s old photographs, which not only make Grandma proud, but also give the bar an air of authenticity.  The crowd can best be described as modern retro; pinstripes, vests, and an overriding art deco feel pervade the space.  However, the comfortable atmosphere allows everyone to feel right at home, seersucker suit or not.

Silver Lining is reminiscent of an old speakeasy bar, except without the looming tension of prohibition.  So swing by for the jazz, an expertly fashioned cocktail, or perhaps just to speak easy with some friends.

The Oscar Shoppe – South Street Seaport, Pier 17, 212-608-3697

Gifts, posters, and so much more await you at The Oscar Shoppe which just opened on the second floor of the Pier 17 Mall.

7 Hanover Square Barber Shop – 7 Hanover Square, 646-340-6071

Barbers Mike, Eddie, and Rafael bring their hair cutting expertise to their new shop at 7 Hanover Square.  Swing by for a haircut, a hot-towel shave, or just a quick trim before a night out.  7 Hanover Square Barber Shop is also kid friendly.

TBD Lounge – 15 Gold Street

Kevin O’Gilvie, CEO and Founder of Chill Marketing, has partnered with Gild Hall, a Thompson Hotel, to bring Lower Manhattan the TBD Lounge.  The Libertine Restaurant at Gild Hall transforms into the TBD Lounge Thursdays through Saturday from 6 PM to 2 AM.

The inspiration for the space came after a group of local artists used the long, stark hallway to showcase their art work.  The TBD Lounge creates a dynamic environment that promotes art, culture, and nightlife – evoking a “to be determined” spirit.

Nahui Ollin Arm Candy - 21 Fulton Street, 732-460-1900

Using recycled candy wrappers may seem like an unusual material to use in a handbag, but that’s what fashion is all about — creativity.  Nahui Ollin Arm Candy sells trendy, yet affordable, handbags and accessories made from recycled candy wrappers.  So if you’re looking to make a totally sweet fashion statement, Nahui Ollin Arm Candy is the place to go.

Luke’s Lobster – 26 South William Street, 212-747-1700

You might say, in a New England accent, “You can get theyah from heeah,” when you realize just how easy it is to find authentic Maine lobster roll in Lower Manhattan. The father-son duo behind the seafood sensation, Luke’s Lobster, have just opened their newest location at 26 South William Street. The stellar lobster roll is always a great choice, but there are a variety of other morsels from Maine to entice your palate as well. Try the New England Clam Chowder, Empress Crab Claws, or Noah’s Ark – a meal of biblical proportions.

Milk Street Cafe – 40 Wall Street, 646-827-9955

Flat technology tables, produce soak sinks, line busters – terms that may sound esoteric — are just some of the innovations used at Milk Street Café every day to maintain their high culinary standards. The Boston-based restaurant offers homemade foods that are so beautifully prepared, you just might pause for a moment to admire the presentation before enjoying your meal.

SSSGood

Welcome back to Owen for Business! From the South Street Seaport to Battery Park City, an array of new establishments has just opened that will entice, surprise, and satisfy Lower Manhattanites. If you see any new retailers or changes to existing retailers, please email me at tre@downtownny.com. Thanks!

Soul Daddy - 189 Front Street, 212-269-2324

It’s no surprise that Jamawn Woods, winner of the reality TV competition “America’s Next Great Restaurant,” chose Lower Manhattan as the ideal spot for his new restaurant. Soul Daddy, located at the South Street Seaport, combines a fast-casual atmosphere with a new spin on old-school southern soul food.

There is no deep fryer on the premises and Soul Daddy uses only fresh ingredients. The menu includes baked battered chicken instead of fried, pulled-pork sandwiches, collard greens, sweet molasses mustard and much, much more. So if you’re in the mood for some food for the soul, head on down to Soul Daddy.

Red Mango – 111 Fulton Street, 212-321-3210

A kaleidoscope of frozen yogurt flavors awaits you at the recently opened Red Mango location on Fulton Street. You have your choice of Original, Pomegranate and eight other flavors that change depending on the season. This month’s offerings include delectable combinations such as Black Cherry, Raspberry Cheesecake and Dark Chocolate. All flavors, except Dark Chocolate, are nonfat and Red Mango is all-natural, gluten-free, probiotic and kosher. Also, this is the second Red Mango to offer completely self-serve frozen yogurt and smoothies. You can choose your favorite flavors and toppings combos, and create a personalized, delicious concoction. Oh, how sweet it is.

Shake Shack - 215 Murray Street, 646-545-4600

Shake Shack has opened in Lower Manhattan! Shake Shack’s reputation was undeniably established following the success of its original Madison Square Park location. Since then, quite a few locations have sprouted up throughout the city, and Danny Meyer has just opened his latest venture in Battery Park City.

The Shake Shack concept began as a modern day “roadside” burger stand serving delicious burgers, hot dogs, and frozen custard. The menu offers so much more to compliment that famous burger topped with ShackSauce. Shake Shack offers a vegetarian ‘shroom’ burger, a ‘concrete’ made with three layers of frozen custard, and ShackMeister Ale brewed in collaboration with Brooklyn Brewery. It’s no surprise that Shake Shack’s popularity has swept New York, and now Lower Manhattan has our very own spot just down the block.

Merchants Market – 10 Battery Place, New Amsterdam Plein & Pavillion, 212-248-0707

The New Amsterdam Plein & Pavillion designed by Ben van Berkel offers more than just a visual feast. Within the curved structure you will find Merchants Market, a café serving sandwiches, snacks and beverages. There are plenty of tables and seating to enjoy a gourmet snack or sip a refreshing beer. Merchants Market also is the only place in New York where you can get a ‘battery bun,’ which is a scrumptious combination of coffee cake, cinnabon, and deliciousness. And – right next door is a new Downtown Alliance visitor kiosk to help you get around.

Expo Barbers - 90 William Street, 212-785-8000

Owner Isaac Sosunov brings more than 10 years of hairstyling experience to Lower Manhattan. Expo Barbers opens at 7 AM to accommodate the busy rush-hour crowd, but once you recline in one of his leather chairs you won’t be in a hurry anymore. Relax while you watch your program of choice on the HD flat-screen. You’ll likely become a regular once you discover that your fifth haircut is free!

Regis Royal – 21 Rector Street, 212-321-3000

At Regis Royal you’ll find high ceilings, sunlight pouring in and a comfortable modern décor that will prepare you for a “royal” treatment. Menu items such as the bucatini and artichokes a la nona harken back to their Tuscan origins. At Regis Royal there is something for everyone. The tomato bisque and crab cakes already are popular favorites. The chargrilled burger on focaccia bread topped with mushrooms and manchego cheese, and accompanied by truffle and parmesan dusted fries, is a great excuse to leave the office for lunch.

If you’re in the mood for something lighter, try a salad or a thin-crust brick oven pizza, but don’t forget to save some room for dessert! The tiramisu, crème brulee, and assorted cakes are all made in-house and are the perfect finish to any meal.

Empire – 8 Murray Street, 212-346-9688

Empire serves a variety of Japanese, Chinese, and Thai cuisine in a comfortable and convivial space. Try one of its signature dishes, such as Thai mango shrimp, Szechuan triple crown, or orange and sesame beef.

The Copper Barrel – 6 Murray Street, 212-323-7100

A new partnership and a new makeover transformed KD Connelly’s Bar into The Copper Barrel. There is a party and game room downstairs, and all-day happy hour! Drink specials include $3 pints, $4 margaritas, and a variety of other food and drink specials.

Pita Press — 25 Cedar Street, 212-344-9737

Yogurt has never been this exciting. Pita Press, opened by the same owners of the successful Koyzina Kafe across the street, raises the bar from traditional to artisanal Greek fare. Stop by for the fruit and nut-infused yogurt, vegetarian and vegan pitas, imported olive oil and honey, and ‘Greek Mountain Tea’ brewed on the premises. And an added bonus: Each dish is served on eco-friendly plates.

Algonquin Seaport Theater — 89 South Street, 212-349-7505

The Algonquin Seaport Theater just opened its new location at Pier 17, overlooking the East River. Its diverse concert schedule includes jazz, bluegrass, karaoke and cabaret, all with breathtaking views of the Brooklyn Bridge as a backdrop. Live music begins at 7 PM, Tuesday to Sunday. There are also children’s theater programs, like puppet shows, fairy tales, and historic re-enactments.

Charlotte’s Place — 109 Greenwich Street, 212-602-9661

Who said nothing in life is free? At Charlotte’s Place, the motto is ‘Open to All, Free to Use.” Discover computers with free WiFi, conference rooms, art shows, and poetry readings. When Charlotte Scott passed away, she left Trinity Church a generous donation leading to the establishment of Charlotte’s Place, a friendly oasis in the midst of the economic center of the world. While you’re there, stock up on another freebie: community spirit.

Murphy’s Tavern — 6 Stone Street, 212-425-1700

Manhattan can be a lonely place, but it doesn’t have to be. Tucked away down Stone Street you’ll find Murphy’s Tavern, recently opened by Brian Murphy. One visit and you’ll feel like an old neighborhood friend. There is also a large second-floor space, great for parties and gatherings with friends old and new. Swing by for Happy Hour (5-8 PM), or an after-dinner brew.

My Suit –- 30 Broad, 646-556-7430

When asked about the vision for My Suit, VP of retail James Hancock said two words (at least I think it’s two words): mass-market customization. Starting at $495, clients can have a customized suit made just for them. Hancock explains that My Suit keeps the cost of a custom-made suit down because they own their own fabric mill. Once your measurements are taken, your new suit will be ready in two weeks for pickup. Plus, it’s easy to order more suits in your size from My Suit’s website. You can ask for James Hancock when scheduling an appointment, although it quickly becomes just “Jimmy.” (Appointments preferred, walk-ins welcome).

Laila Rowe – 99 Wall Street, 212-785-0725

Find hats, clothing and everything else you’d need for a night out on the town at this accessories haven. Feel free to roam the aisles and peruse the shelves while swaying to the lively music.

Koko — 120 Greenwich Street, 212-321-6600

For those who lamented the loss of Lili’s Noodle Shop, take heart, because Kenny Yin is back with his recently opened Koko. This Asian Fusion restaurant combines flavors from Chinese, Japanese, and Thai cuisine, and also has a sushi bar. Some of the specialties of the house are the spiciest, and those whose taste buds are up to the challenge will be greatly rewarded. The interior design is a bit of fusion itself, with scarlet red walls, modern lighting design and Asian-inspired artwork.

owenforbiz

Lower Manhattan is officially Owen for Business!

For those of you who enjoyed Mess Around Downtown and Joe on the Go, Owen for Business will continue to keep you updated on all retail openings and closings in the district. Just for some background, I’m the new Retail Coordinator, Michael Owen, and I joined the Alliance after completing my studies in historic preservation at The Pratt Institute. If you see any new retailers or any changes to existing retailers, please email me at tre@downtownny.com. Thanks!

Ryan Maguire’s Ale House – 28 Cliff Street, 212-566-6906

After being closed for a year following a terrible fire, Ryan Maguire’s recently reopened just in time for St. Patrick’s Day. The renovated space has a great new look but still has that inviting atmosphere locals have come to know so well. Spacious seating in the back makes families feel welcome, or you can find a spot at the handsome bar to watch the game. The beer selection features everything from regulars like Bud, Miller Lite, and Guinness to changing local and craft beers with colorful names that might test your pronunciation skills. Hint: The more syllables in the name, the higher the alcohol content. Ryan Maguire’s also offers a free buffet Monday to Friday, from 5-7 PM. As if that wasn’t enough, there are promotional events every Wednesday featuring new beers and wines.

Water Street Gourmet Deli & Pizza – 12 Water Street, 212-785-5220

From the owners who brought you Cafe Groppi on Water Street, Water Street Gourmet Deli & Pizza offers you the same variety and quality lunch choices for a quick bite during a busy day or have them cater your next office event.

Verizon Wireless – 30 Broad Street, 212-968-1200

The new Verizon Wireless store is conveniently located on Broad Street right by the New York Stock Exchange. But despite the bustling pedestrian traffic outside, the excellent customer service means there’s rarely a long line. Remember the waiting room scene at the end of Beetlejuice? Well you won’t find anything like that here–only fast and courteous service for all your phone needs.

Town - 88 Greenwich Street, 212-269-8888

Town, a residential real estate brokerage firm, takes customer service to new heights by providing services such as gym memberships and theater tickets, in addition to traditional real estate services. Even their address has a certain elegant panache–The Trinity Building.
