JALBERT

Welcome back to Joe On the Go! The weather has been a bit unpredictable these past few weeks, but that hasn’t stopped me from hitting the streets in search of the newest openings in Lower Manhattan. Foodies rejoice! Several new restaurants recently opened with cuisines ranging from Indian to gourmet falafel. As always, if you see any new retailers or any changes to existing retailers, please e-mail me at tre@downtownny.com. If you’re looking for information on a particular retailer, you can check our Downtown Directory. Bon Appetit!

Yorganic – 275 Greenwich Street, 212-732-8888

Yorganic prides itself on offering completely organic fruits, vegetables, dairy, sugar, flour, eggs and natural ingredients. Their signature item, the Bliss Bowl, features steamed rice or noodles topped with fresh, sauteed vegetables mixed with their on-site chef’s special sauce. They also offer the first frozen yogurt made with organic milk, sugar and yogurt.

Crisp - 111 Fulton Street, 212-321-2200

Gourmet. Falafel. Those two words alone should be enough to make a New Yorker’s stomach growl in anticipation. Don’t expect to pay “gourmet” prices at Crisp, though. Their signature “Crisp” falafel sandwich, layered with hummus, cubed salad, sour cabbage salad, parsley and vinaigrette sauce, is only $6.75. Plus, all packaging is 100% biodegradable and printed with environmentally friendly soy ink. Check this place out for a quick bite that’s easy on your wallet and your conscience!

Hot Clay Oven – 101 Maiden Lane, 212-269-2103

This new Indian Fusion grill is HOT. How hot? Try 900° F. Their clay oven, formally known as a “tandoor,” has been the cooking method of choice in Northern India since the 14th century. You construct your own custom meal, made from their all-natural, preservative-free ingredients. Don’t like spice? Not to worry—they cater to medium and mild palettes too.

Dr. Mike & Son Hairstylist – 98 Chambers Street, 212-227-6116

At Dr. Mike’s, “you don’t have to be a king to receive the royal treatment.” This popular hairstylist recently opened a second location, on Chambers Street. Haircuts start at $15, and if you buy a block of ten in advance every tenth cut is free. Your best bet is to make an appointment. As Dr. Mike says, “those who think ahead, call ahead.”

JALBERT

Welcome to the inaugural installment of Joe On The Go! In the Mess Around Downtown, Luke gave you the scoop on new retailers in Lower Manhattan. My name is Joe Jalbert, and I’ll be filling in for Mr. Mess, hitting the pavement to bring you info on retail openings and closings in the district. If you’re looking for information on a particular retailer, you can check our handy Downtown Directory. If you see any new retailers or any changes to existing retailers, please e-mail me at tre@downtownny.com. Thanks!

Bengal Curry and Kebabs – 65 West Broadway, 212-571-0012

This cozy little kebab house serves up no-frills Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi cuisine just a few blocks north of the World Trade Center. It’s a great spot to grab a quick lunch. They deliver, too!

Mangez Avec Moi – 71-73 West Broadway, 212-385-0008

The name may be French, but you won’t find any escargot here. Mangez Avec Moi specializes in pan-Asian cuisine. From pad thai to bánh mì, this is a great place to go for southeast Asian cuisine in Lower Manhattan. Their menu boasts “elephant delivery,” though I have yet to see any evidence of pachyderms on the premises.

La Lumia – 27 Park Place, Suite 304, 212-966-3923

This boutique offers exclusive designs from 25-year fashion veteran Jackie Sencion. Some of Ms. Sencion’s private labels include a contemporary knitwear line, a line of hand-crafted leather and a specialty denim line. The shop also features fashions from other designers and small companies.

Park Place Fine Jewelry – 15 Park Place, 212-227-7555

Park Place. Luxury. No, it’s not the monopoly board. It’s Park Place Fine Jewelry. With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, this is the perfect place to shop for your special someone. And don’t worry, there’s no luxury tax.

Tribeca Spine and Wellness Center – 51 Warren Street, 212-374-0102

Chiropractic, pain management, physical therapy, massage therapy, nutrition & detox programs; Tribeca Spine & Wellness Center offers the best in both conventional and alternative care. They pride themselves on being the friendliest medical center in New York.

Mess Around Downtown: January 12, 2011

MessAround_GQ

Welcome back to Mess Around Downtown!

The time has come that I, The Mess, retire from my retail beat. No longer will I walk the streets of Lower Manhattan, as I have for the past 2 1/2 years, eagerly scouting out new retailers, tasty bargains, business closings, and any or all of the Downtown lowdown. Thank you to my readers. Thank you to all the business owners who welcomed me into their shops for a tour or to get warm. Thank you to all the restaurateurs who insisted that I sample their food or try their cappuccino. The job was very delicious at times. The pleasure of working outside in what I consider to be a living-and-breathing museum has been an honor.

I’ll leave you with this: Sometimes, as I would meander through the streets of this historical square mile surveying the storefronts, I would envision all those characters from the past who trod those original paths with the soles of their boots and hooves of their horses. I would thank them for inventing what it means to be a New Yorker. And thank them for always leaving this city to us improved upon from when they inherited it. For without that progress there would be no Downtown Alliance and I would have had no job. Mess Around Downtown out.

Read on for all the latest retail openings and news to hit Lower Manhattan these past few weeks. And you can find anything you need with our Downtown Directory. Thanks.

Hello Pasta125 Maiden Lane: 212.557.2782

As I say goodbye this pasta-lovers paradise says hello. It’s as easy as one two three to eat here. Pick your pasta, pick your sauce, pick your cheese and toppings, and pay. Most of the choices are around $6 and they come in an easy-to-eat-out-of takeout box. Vegan? Plain pasta and olive oil is on the menu along with fresh soups and salads to choose from. They also have excellent phone manners when calling for delivery.

——————–

Keg No. 229 - 229 Front Street: 212.566.2337

From the adult beverage slingers at Bin No. 220 on Front Street comes this new beer appreciation bar where you can get a buzz with the help of modern technology. And also munch on some old-school eats like mac and cheese and chicken pot pie. Choose what kind of beer you want on the LCD screen at your table and the computer will send 16 ounces of your liquid gold selection through the tap right at your table. There’s also plenty of bottles and cans the bartender will be happy to pour for you as well. Great for an early date or to party late.

———————

DoubleTree Hotel8 Stone Street: 212.480.9100

Stay at this 399 room hotel on your next visit to NYC. Your olfactory system will be glad you did as you take in the famous DoubleTree chocolate chip cookie smells that fill the lobby and halls. Look for the gym and restaurant with outdoor seating to open soon. The DoubleTree is the fifth hotel to open in Lower Manhattan this year and brought a nice ending to a good year for hotels down here.

Burger King – 106 Fulton Street: No phone yet

Have it in the Financial District way. Have it your way.

Mess Around Downtown: December 15, 2010

2009_12_10_DTA_0033

Welcome back to Mess Around Downtown!

Happy Holidays, Downtowners! Is all that shopping making you hungry? You’ll need to eat to keep your energy up while you search for deals and whittle down your list. Thankfully, many eating establishments have opened in the last couple of weeks down here. So shop, eat, and be merry. You can also find anything you need with our handy Downtown Directory. Feel free to e-mail me at tre@downtownny.com. Thanks.

———————–

Toloache Taqueria83 Maiden Lane: 212.809.9800

Chef  Julian Medina has brought his love of fresh and real Mexican food to Lower Manhattan. The smell of fresh homemade corn tortillas will draw you in and the stellar flavors will keep you coming back for more. Try the Mexican chocolate glazed pork torta, the tilapia braised chipotle salsa with tamarind hearts of palm on a taco, or a huitlacoche (corn fungus) with queso fresco and tomatillo salsa on a burrito. Don’t think twice. Eat here.

——————–

Hudson Produce - 77 Battery Place: 212.945.0500

Hooray! A 24/7 grocer, deli, and super-fresh produce seller opens in Battery Park City. Stop by anytime to shop the huge selection of organic and conventional produce. Get a sandwich, pick up flowers, or grab some beers on your way to a holiday party. The owners will be expanding the selection as time goes on and will offer more and more locally produced vegetation as the seasons change.

———————

City Food Market – 94 Chambers Street: 212.285.3880

A smorgasbord kind of place found only in New York. It’s mainly a Chinese buffet, but it’s also a bakery and fresh salad bar. They also make sushi, sandwiches, brew coffee to go, and make ice cream. Stop in for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

———————-

Dark Horse – 17 Murray Street: 212.608.3900

Dark Horse is a sports fan’s place to sit down, drink a beer, eat a burger, and watch any football, basketball, soccer, or baseball game. There are plenty of TVs for everyone in this neighborhoody bar that was quickly flipped from 17 Murray Bar and Restaurant. ‘Tis the season to have your next party here and watch sports while you celebrate.

Business Tidbits and Updates

- Attention, gentlemen. John Allan’s man spa is now open on Saturdays from 10 AM to 3 PM. Get your groom on.

Mess Around Downtown: November 22, 2010

Monday, November 22nd, 2010

citytutrkey

Welcome back to Mess Around Downtown!

Hear ye! Hear ye! The time to feast and to be thankful is upon us once more, my dear Downtowners. This year I’m thankful for super heroes, burritos, not having to wait for over 15 minutes when I go to the emergency room, pie, and rock-climbing walls. I’m also thankful that I can find all of these things in Lower Manhattan.  You can also find anything you need with our handy Downtown Directory. Feel free to e-mail me at tre@downtownny.com. Thanks.

———————–

Midtown Comics64 Fulton Street: 212.302.8192

Yes, Gotham’s favorite comic shop, Midtown Comics has opened a third location. But it’s not in Midtown, folks. It’s Downtown. Spider Man was spotted at the grand opening getting a head start on his holiday shopping and Jim Lee will be hanging out and signing things from 2 to 4 PM on December 19. The store is stocked with all your favorite comic books, action figures, books about comic books, apparel, mugs and more. You must stop by to check out the  giant and super powerful New Release Wall.

——————–

Emergency Medical Care - 200 Chambers Street: 212.962.6600

Have you ever waited for five hours in an emergency room? I have. I accidentally sat in a wet chair about two hours in. It was not fun. This new upscale Urgent Care center understands that people don’t want to waste their whole day just because they sprained an ankle. They guarantee that you will be seen in 15 minutes by a physician, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant. They have all the capabilities and resources of a hospital ER and an experienced team of providers. Definitely a great new option in the neighborhood.

———————

Xtreme Gym10 Hanover Square: 212.855.0770

A recent study shows that over-eating at Thanksgiving makes people fatter. I call this practice extreme eating. There is only one way to battle the bulge that extreme eating creates around one’s waist: Join the Xtreme Gym. Xtreme offers classes in: spinning, yoga, kick-boxing, hip hop sculpt, cross-fit, and zumba. Lift free weights, work out on a machine, and schedule a rock- wall session.

———————-

Caliente – 97 Trinity Place: 212.227.6192

This Mexican grill is hot hot hot. I like that they keep their menu simple. Enchiladas, nachos, burritos, fajitas, and tacos are what you have to choose from. They’ll make it right in front of you and ask you what you want as you go down the line. I also like that their salsas and sauces are made from scratch and that everything is made fresh everyday. They deliver too.

——————–

The Bread Factory Cafe - 125 Fulton Street: 212.269.0300

It’s a bakery. It’s a cafe. No, wait, it’s a Bread Factory Cafe. But it’s also a deli, creperie, and pizza shop. They serve breakfasts like egg sandwiches, omelets, wraps, and bagels.  For $5.50 you can create your lunch sandwich. They’ve got burgers, stone oven pizzas, panini, and even quesadillas. Stop in for an espresso, iced frappe, or a protein smoothie. Buy whole cakes and pies for your office. If it’s food and American, I think they have it. Their menu is 11 pages and has a table of contents.

Business Tidbits and Updates

- The Greene Grape at 55 Liberty Street held a contest to rename this wine store last month. They recently announced the winner and will soon be known as Downtown Cellars.

- Win Won Chinese at 10 Liberty Place has closed.

Order your Thanksgiving meal from here and enjoy roasted apples with cider vinaigrette, candied sweet potatoes, cornbread mushroom pecan stuffing, roasted turkey, and, of course, pumpkin pie.

———————-

William Nail Spa N.Y. – 90 William Street: 212.785.5588

——————–

Business Tidbits and Updates

- Ever wanted a piece of Adrienne’s or Inatteso pizza (same recipe and owners) and didn’t want to buy a whole pie? Well, word on the street is that this coveted pizza is sold by the slice at Inatesso Cafe, located at 38 West Street just up the block from Inatesso Pizzabar. Now that’s an amenity.

Fetch Club85 South Street: 212.401.8199

Don’t call this 13,000 square-foot dog paradise a “dog daycare”. It’s a club, spa, hotel, fitness center, boutique, and general canine appreciation mecca all rolled into one. Become a member and your best friend will have access to the amazing 3,000 square-foot indoor lawn, personal training sessions, microbubble baths, Reiki massages, treadmills with flatscreen TV’s, a private suite in the hotel, and long walks with a certified handler. ——————–

Chop’t - 80 Pine Street: 917.338.4803

Eating your vegetables is easy when they’re this good. This is the sixth Chop’t to open in Manhattan, and Downtown herbivores are devouring these fresh and creative salads. Eat a Fall Classic with pears, walnuts, turkey, blue cheese, mesclun, romaine, and cider vinaigrette. Chop’t does roughage filled sandwiches, too. Like the Chop’t po’ boy; mmmm fried chicken, cheddar cheese, tomato, red onion, and romaine wrapped in a whole wheat flatbread.

The Bailey Pub & Brasserie52 William Street: 212.859.2200

From the fine people at Trinity Place comes this new eating and drinking establishment. They’ve completely revamped the interior into a sleek and spacious venue fit for a date or a large group outing. They’re serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner everyday. Stop in for a Full Irish Breakfast, Adobo Steak Salad, or a Sauteed Brook Trout.

——————–

Chickpea - 110 William Street: 212.566.5666

“Always baked. Never fried.”  That is the motto of this new little place to nosh on John Street. They’re doing breakfast and lunch during the week. I like the prices. A spinach and mushroom omelette is just $3. Egg and cheese sandwiches are $2. They’ve got bagels, lox, oatmeal, and grilled cheese too. For lunch choose from hummus plates, kebabs,  falafel, shawarma, and a hybrid called shawafel. Finish your meal with a honey cake or baklava. Yum.

———————

Rosetta Wines40 Exchange Place: 212.361.0007

Welcome back to Mess Around Downtown!

Hello Downtowners. Even as the sun sets on summer in Lower Manhattan new retailers are settling in to their new storefronts. Hand-carved combs, hip art galleries, a fresh Pret, and a guy named Geoffrey await you. And remember that you can find anything you need with our handy Downtown Directory. Don’t be afraid to email me at tre@downtownny.com. Thanks.

Volume Black89 Washington Street: 858.442.6798

Volume Black Gallery supports and shows the best of New York’s emerging artists. The dynamic curators behind Volume Black are excited to be bringing even more great art to Lower Manhattan. Their opening exhibition is called The Accretion of Events and it is very worth stopping by to browse, buy, and constructively critique.

——————–

Carpenter Tan - 190 Front Street: 347.669.2662

According to my internet research this Chinese company has been branching out lately and doing pretty well. Located in the South Street Seaport, this is the second store to open in the United States. The other is in Queens. The craftsmen of Carpenter Tan hand-carve combs, brushes, and hand mirrors  from wood, horns, and bone. They even tell you how and why to take care of your hair. After a visit to this store you will have a new respect for the beauty of this ancient craft.

———————

Toys “R” Us Express - 89 South Street, Pier 17: 212.608.7846

I wish I had a backwards “R” on my keyboard. Everyone knows what this store is because we were all kids at one time in our lives. And even though we all grew up, we’re still Toys “R” Us kids at heart. The Express part doesn’t mean they’re going to rush you. It just means that the store fits nicely into a mall.

————————

Pret A Manger- 179 Broadway: 646.558.8745

I’m personally very excited that Downtown’s fourth Pret opened it’s doors earlier this week. I love their fresh made and additive free philosophy on food. All of their food is made on site every day and is just waiting in a refrigerator for you to come by and eat it. I’m addicted to their ginger beer too. Pret is what fast food should be.

Welcome back to Mess Around Downtown!

It’s been a hot and busy summer down here in good ol’ Lower Manhattan.   But have no fear: the fun and sun continue on with all of the River to River Festival events. ———————–

BLT Bar & Grill123 Washington Street: 646.826.8666

The W’s much-anticipated, two-story restaurant is open for eating. The walls are literally a work of art. Through the dim filaments of  hanging antique lanterns, the hand-painted mural will catch your eye as it subtly spirals through the verticality of the space. But the walls aren’t the only delectable option. It’s the burgers, pastas, pizza, and waffles you’ll want to take in. For breakfast, have a “Downtown” Burrito filled with cheddar cheese, scrambled eggs, peppers, and salsa. Lunch on the BLT Burger with double-smoked bacon, aged cheddar, and fries. And for dinner, there’s pizza that incorporates cream and bacon! Not done yet? Enjoy a Key Lime Pavlova for dessert. Eat here.

——————–

Five Guys Burgers and Fries - 112 Fulton Street: 212.385.4458

Get your made-to-order, hot-and-juicy burgers here! I’m pretty sure Five Guys needs no introduction to all of you meat-loving Americans down here. Even the President can’t resist these 100% fresh beef  burgers. Enjoy.

———————

Le Pain Quotidien - 2 River Terrace: 212.227.2300

Baked goods abound these days in Battery Park City thanks to this new bakery, which opened last week. Outdoor seating is plentiful. And, to go along with the smell of fresh-baked bread, free Wi-Fi also fills the air. It’s a pleasant and comfy spot near the water to gnosh, caffeinate, and compute.
