Zuccotti Park has had quite a history.  Formerly called Liberty Plaza Park, it was built in 1968 in return for a height bonus for an adjacent building at the time of its construction and was one of the few open spaces with tables and seats in the Financial District. It was renamed Zuccotti Park in honor of John E. Zuccotti, Director/Co-Chairman of Brookfield Properties.

In 2001, in the midst of September 11th, the park was used as a staging area for recovery efforts.  In 2011 it became campgrounds and home-base for the “Occupy Wall Street” protest.

Now, it is home to pigeons and passersby and set all aglow for the holiday season!

Picture Lower Manhattan: Holiday Shopping

Wednesday, December 19th, 2012

When you live a busy life in NYC, sometimes it’s hard to get all of your holiday shopping done in time.  Being a last minute holiday shopper, places like Century 21, Trinity Place Department Store and TJ Maxx are a dream come true in getting all of my shopping done in one (maybe two) stops.  There’s also the Pier 17 mall at the South Street Seaport.

The best part is, I don’t have to go too far after work because they are all right here in Lower Manhattan!

Picture Lower Manhattan: Equitable Building Spreads Holiday Cheer

Tuesday, December 11th, 2012

This National Historic Landmark owned by Silverstein Properties, and home to the Downtown Alliance, is all dressed up and ringing in the holiday spirit with a beautiful wreath above its main entrance and a large decorated tree in its lobby – which also means that their annual toy drive has begun.

Every year, 120 Broadway has a toy drive on behalf of the Hamilton-Madison House – collecting new toys under the lobby holiday tree from people who work in the building, and donating them to less-fortunate children just in time for the holidays.  This year, they are also conducting a food drive for City Harvest and  a coat drive for New York Cares to benefit those who were affected by Hurricane Sandy.

Q&A with Solomon Woods, Doorman, Conrad New York Hotel

Thursday, December 6th, 2012

Solomon Woods

If you have ever visited the Conrad New York Hotel, you may have been greeted by this smiling face.  His name is Solomon Woods and he is the doorman at the Conrad.  Well, we recently got up-close and personal with Mr. Woods and found out a little bit more about the man behind the friendly smile.

How long have you worked in Lower Manhattan?
I have been working within Lower Manhattan for over 17 years.

How have you seen the neighborhood change during the time you have worked here?
There is so much more to do, whether it’s listening to a concert in the World Financial Plaza or strolling through the Esplanade viewing the amazing sculptures and public art. The biggest  change is that Lower Manhattan has become more community-oriented.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?
Working in the service field, I’ve had many opportunities to create positive experiences with people. If our guests have had a long office day or a hectic airport experience or just a wild taxi ride, when the guest walks into the Conrad New York Hotel, it’s my ability to turn their negative day into a positive one.

What is your favorite aspect of the Conrad Hotel?
Our rooftop bar–the Loopy Doopy Bar–offers a unique, intimate vibe. It also has spectacular sunset views overlooking the Hudson River.

Who is the most interesting person you have assisted in your tenure at this establishment?
It would be unfair to name one but I would say the Conrad has hosted many celebrities and athletes. You never know who you will run into at the Conrad.

This holiday, you can experience the best of Lower Manhattan on your next stay at the Conrad New York Hotel with their Discover Downtown package.

This package includes:

  • Two complimentary tickets to a “Wall Street Walks” walking tour
  • Two passes to the National 9/11 Memorial (9/11 Memorial provides reservations free of charge)
  • Continental Breakfast for two in ATRIO and Late checkout until 2PM (Based on availability).

Offer valid at Conrad New York for stays booked between November 26th, 2012 – December 31st, 2013 and completed between November 26th, 2012 – December 31st, 2013.

Two-night minimum stay required. Please be advised the Wall Street Walking Tours are only available on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 11AM and 1PM.

Picture Lower Manhattan: New York Stock Exchange Tree Lighting Ceremony

Wednesday, December 5th, 2012

Tuesday evening, people gathered once again for the 89th Annual New York Stock Exchange Tree Lighting Ceremony – with live performances, hot beverages and cookies!

The lighting has been a tradition since 1923. This year’s tree is a Norway Spruce hailing from Newburgh, N.Y. and stands 45 feet high and 35 feet wide.  The tree is adorned with 3,500 white LED lights, 1,000 multi-colored balls (with the NYSE Euronext logo printed on them) and a 6 foot star on top – all supported on an 8 foot by 10 foot base fashioned as a gold box.

Picture Lower Manhattan: The Nutcracker

Friday, November 30th, 2012

Parents, children and employees at the World Financial Center enjoyed a performance on Wednesday of Keith Michael’s The Nutcracker by the New York Theatre Ballet. The performance was condensed into a child-friendly, one-hour format and held in the Winter Garden under a brilliant umbrella of 50,000 bright white lights which adorned the atrium’s palm trees.
