Hive Logo for Blog

This is just my second blog post on the Downtown Diary and already I’m revealing my deepest, darkest secrets. I’m really into weather. I mean: forecast models, hurricane tracking, comparing the personalities of our local meteorologists (I met Janice Huff!), and of course, worshipping Jim Cantore. Last week there were lots of predictions of the impending “snowpocalypse” across the Eastern Seaboard, and perhaps because I like the snow I didn’t pay much attention to the details; I was convinced we were going to get walloped.

Because I’m here at the Hive at 55 every day, I’m getting to know our members quite well. And last Friday I sat by the door and wished everyone a happy, snowy weekend. “Are you taking your kids to Central Park to go sledding? “I hope you like the snow, it’s gonna be a doozy!” “I don’t know if we are even going to be open on Monday!”

Boy did I miss that one. We all know how the weekend turned out: zero snow fell in Central Park and really no snow fell north of central New Jersey. But as I write this post, another storm is on the way. I’ve done my research and can make this promise: there will be snow on the ground when you read this! And of course now I don’t want a complete snowmageddon because Wednesday night is the Hive’s first Happy Hour at  Harry’s Café.There are more than 30 people who have signed up to go to this event and the Hive is so thrilled to know people want to come out and support us. Knock on wood –- but for what -– no blizzard? Brave Hivers? We’ll see.

The members of the Hive have made a commitment to work here and I don’t think foul weather will hold them back. But as I schedule more events and Meetups here at the Hive, every organizer seems to have a horror story thanks to Mother Nature. Hopefully fans of the Hive will emulate (the first half of) the Postman’s Creed, and come to some of our upcoming events that occur in the evening: NYC Hadoop’s Introduction to HBase on February 11, Website Bootcamp on February 18, Search Engine Optimization and Marketing on February 25, all beginning at 6:30pm at the Hive.

I’m glad to say that we’re getting into a routine here. Nearly every Thursday you can expect an informative Meetup, as well as monthly happy hours and free lunches for members. We are also working on more workshops organized by our members and friends of the Hive, so keep checking our event page to learn more about exciting programming options. And as much as I like the snow, let’s not have these weekly snow storms be part of the routine.

We were so thrilled here at the Hive to be included in a feature by the New York Times City Room Blog on the coworking movement in NYC.  You can read the article about us and the Brooklyn Creative League here.

There are already lots of Hive events shaping up for February.  Our first monthly happy hour is 2/10 at Harry’s Café with two-for-one drink specials and draft beer — don’t forget to RSVP here so we know you’re coming!

February 18th is jam-packed with events in the am and pm.  In the morning there’s a legal workshop at the law firm DLA Piper at 1251 6th Avenue, 27th Floor.  The New York City Economic Development Corporation has organized this workshop for early stage startups.  The event will review a step-by-step guide to incorporation, ideal pitches, drafting term sheets for investors, and IP protection.  RSVP here to attend.  The evening brings Web site Bootcamp to the Hive.  This meetup group will be focusing on BYOW, Bring Your Own Web site to help you realize the potential of your Web site.  RSVP here.

Finally, our monthly members lunch will take place 2/19 around noon.  In addition to great food, expect a lively discussion on the Future of Work: A Look at Learning Systems and Collaboration in 2010 led by Hive member and Futurist, Garry Golden.  It’s a great opportunity to step away from you laptop and meet your fellow coworkers.  Let us know if you’re coming so we’ll have enough food!  RSVP here.

We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events!

“There was always Forlini’s or Sal’s, or Carmine’s, or Sweet’s, or Sloppy Louie’s, or Oscar’s Delmonico, but he had always liked Harry’s.  It was the farthest away from Centre Street, but it didn’t matter –- the quick cab ride relaxed him.  He got out on Water Street and walked to Hanover Square, stood outside and thought, This is my place.”

-Let the Great World Spin, Colum McCann

For Hive at 55 members, they too will get to experience the history and fun that has made Harry’s a classic in Lower Manhattan since 1972.  Harry’s will be hosting our first happy hour on Wednesday, February 10th from 6:30–8:30pm.  Drinks will be buy one get one free on select cocktails and draft beer.  RSVP so we know to expect you!  You don’t have to be a member — just interested in meeting cool people.

Members already got to enjoy Harry’s once, without even leaving the Hive; our Grand Opening was catered by them. And now Harry’s Italian delivers to the door; every fourth Monday of each month we have a members’ luncheon.  It’s a time to step away from your computer, take a break, and get to know your fellow members.  Some days we’ll have a member presentation, other times we’ll all just hang out. Remember to sign up to receive our calendar of events on our Web site so you don’t miss out on these and other exciting happenings at www.hiveat55.com.

We’re working on lots more programming, classes and workshops to come.  If there’s a topic you’d like to learn more about, let us know.  Interested in building a particular skill set, or have some experience you think others would benefit from?  Let us know.  You can always e-mail us at hiveat55@downtownny.com.

Let Me Please Introduce Myself…I’m a Man of Hive at 55

Hive Logo for Blog

I’d like to introduce myself to the community – my name is Brian DiFeo, the Community Manager at the Hive at 55 and the newest member at the Alliance for Downtown New York. It has been a month since I started working here and I am still learning a lot about the Hive, the Alliance, and the neighborhood. Combine the fact that I love history and architecture with my lack of knowledge about Lower Manhattan, and you may mistake me for a tourist snapping pictures or gazing at the marvelous buildings.

I’ve never worked in this neighborhood, and honestly haven’t visited it in a long time. That’s New York for you: I’ve lived here for 9 years and I just discovered Stone Street! But I have been impressed with the juxtaposition of globally known landmarks close to mom and pop shops and small cafes. And I did most of my holiday shopping within walking distance of my new office.

As for the Hive, the first month has been a wonderful experience. I started on the night of the launch party and met dozens of fascinating people. While the holidays slowed our traffic, it let me focus on how the Hive operates and consider the ways we can get more people interested. Since the New Year, a lot more people have been working here and it’s always a pleasure to meet them.

I used to work from home and I can definitely relate to the folks who come through the Hive’s door – it’s a sense of relief to realize others have been trapped in their apartments, in front of a computer, with minimal human interaction. Enter the Hive, and you feel the warmth and energy immediately. Members have all types of professional backgrounds, and they learn about the Hive through press articles, forwarded emails, blog posts, and word of mouth. But each member has at least one thing in common: they found a collaborative work environment that is somewhere between a coffee shop, an office, and a home.

The “community” side of things is picking up, with people chatting around the coffee pot and sharing ideas related to work, lunch spots, and everything in between. The members are gaining a sense of “belonging” here, as the coffee mugs accumulate by the sink and some cereal gets left in the cupboard. There has been a lonely scarf on one table that no one seems to know what to do with; maybe we will create a lost-and-found box, another benchmark reached as the Hive develops its identity as a coworking community.

Jelly Hive

Hive Logo for Blog

Well, we survived the holidays. We’ve weathered the season’s first snow storm and some unruly winds. You may have put aside that project, figuring it could wait until the New Year, not wanting to get out of your warm apartment, but now it is time for some New Year’s Resolutions. It’s time to get that work done and finally cross it off your list. The Hive is here to help you focus. You can finally get away from the tv and other distractions in your home and get some work done! You also have the added benefit of meeting people who are similarly trying to accomplish their own work…  maybe they have some expertise in an area you could really benefit from. You just don’t know what you’ll find until you come on in and see what all the buzz is about.

This is my invitation to all of you to come in and test run the Hive. If you’re a bit of a commitment-phobe we have a few events on the horizon where you can come in and see the Hive – no strings attached. On Friday, January 15th, we will be hosting the first Jelly of 2010. This is an all day event where people can come together and work at no cost. Essentially, it’s a lighter version of what the Hive is all about. You can learn more about Jelly and other Jelly’s taking place around the world here. You can also RSVP to attend our Jelly here. You will also have the opportunity to meet all the regular Hive members and see what the Hive is all about!

The next event we are hosting is even more casual – an opportunity to meet our Lower Manhattan neighbors! The Tribeca Performing Arts Center has been organizing monthly networking events for over four years in different locations around Lower Manhattan. The first 2010 Meet and Greet will be on Wednesday, January 20th from 6:30 – 9:00pm. Frankly Wines has kindly donated beverages, and snacks will also be provided. We promise no speeches or remarks – just a chance to make a new friend or a business connection.

As an added incentive, new members who drop off their business card at either of these events will receive a free day to work at the Hive!

Soon to come are scheduled happy hours at Harry’s Café and also lunches from Harry’s Italian who supplied the delicious food at our launch party last month. You can also always check out our calendar of events but I’ll keep you posted here too!

We’re buzzing!

This week I have to keep the blog post short- we are up and running and have lots of people working!  The Hive is really buzzing!  Our launch party was on Tuesday night and we had such a great turnout!  State Senator Daniel Squadron came to show his support of the freelance and small business community and Bill Rudin of Rudin Management also came and mingled with many of the new coworkers of the space.

There was great food and drink provided by our sponsor, Harry’s Italian – I still have leftovers people are nibbling at!  You can go to www.hiveat55.com/photo-gallery to check out some photos from the night!  It was so great to celebrate the launch of the Hive with so many of you – and I hope to see everyone again soon at the Hive!  If you came you got to see our first piece of art up on the wall – our logo is up in 3D!  I hope to get a lot of art up on the walls soon and I realize I need to bring some plants in too!

Other exciting news is that we brought our new Community Manager on board this week.  So when you come to the Hive you will meet Brian DiFeo who will be getting to know all our members and taking everyone’s comments and ideas for the Hive.  You can always reach us at hiveat55@downtownny.com if you have any questions or comments!

For those of you who have not checked out the Hive yet – we are offering a promotion for first time users to test-run the space!  From now until December 22nd, come in and try out the Hive for a free day!  So come check out the Hive and see what all the buzz is about!  Just email us at hiveat55@downtownny.com with the subject “Free Trial” and let us know what day you plan on dropping by!  We are open Monday to Friday 9am – 6pm and Thursday until 9pm!

Hope to see you soon!

The Hive is open! December 1st was the grand opening of the Hive and we had a number of people working on day one. While the open house days are now over – I still want to encourage everyone to come in at any time for a tour or to have your questions answered. We are open Monday through Friday 9am – 6pm and Thursdays until 9pm. In case you forgot, we are located at 55 Broad Street on the 13th Floor.

Over the past few weeks I have stopped filling you in on all the construction move-in details to bring you Hive news and updates. Of course, a lot happened in that time and I thought I could catch you up to speed.

Move-in week was totally crazy. From late night deliveries to early morning installations – I was working some long days to make sure the Hive was up and running for the open house. As should be expected, a few items didn’t arrive on time, so I was touring the space minus one conference table and one coffee table. I think it was okay – perhaps the best two items to be running late.

The other main malfunction was the power to the desks. I may have mentioned that we got these beautiful desks that would be hardwired for power. The furniture installer came and set everything up – but our electrician wasn’t there to run the wires. We had discussed our need for power in the desks with our contractor since day one, so he knew it was coming.

The night before the first open house, I had trouble sleeping. I had a feeling we would have trouble with the electricity for the desks. When I got to the Hive at 8am the next day, I expected to find the electrician and contractor busily working and finishing up the little details. They had always started working at 6:30 or 7am, so usually by the time I arrived a lot had been accomplished. I had thought the electrician would be half finished by the time I got there. Well, not that day. To my surprise, no one was working at the Hive at all.

In the middle of the day our contractors finally rolled through, and when I asked about the electrician, they weren’t sure! The next day the electrician showed up, but only evaluated the desks and didn’t even install anything. Our contractors had the specs for the desk from the very beginning – so the scope of work should not have been a surprise at all.

As I write this post, the issue still has yet to be resolved. Day one of the Hive may have power strips to run power to people’s computers. It should be resolved by day two or three – but, as you can imagine, I’m agonizing over this!

In other news, we are having a designer install a 3D logo on one of the walls – just like in our rendering. It should be installed today or tomorrow. So when you come to our grand opening party (on Tuesday, December 8th from 6pm – 9pm), you can see our first piece of art hanging on the walls.

Party Time!

So I know by now you have all marked your calendars and waited with anticipation for our open house days. Well – they’re upon us! (And don’t put away your planner just yet – you have another don’t miss date to write down.)

Yesterday was day one and we had great turnout. Of course, I hope everyone loved the space as much as I do. I expect to spend many hours hanging out in the lounge in our awesome swivel chairs. If you haven’t been able to swing by, you’re in luck – there’s still time. We will be hosting another open house day today and also on Monday the 30th.

I imagine many of you freelancers will be distracted by all the family obligations – all that turkey, stuffing, and of course football that takes place over Thanksgiving – you’ll probably need an opportunity to buckle down and get some work done following this indulgent holiday. Well, come on over to the Hive on Monday, November 30th and get down to work – it’s the last of the open house days, and an opportunity to see the space, take a tour, have your questions answered, and of course, work (by the way, you are always welcome to just pop-in to the Hive at any time and do any of the above as well!)

I know you have been waiting patiently to hear about this “don’t miss date,” so I won’t lead you on any longer:

We’re having a party…and everyone’s invited!

That’s right, it’s our inaugural party, and I’m sure it’s just one of many to come. After all, the Hive isn’t just about work – it’s about having fun and meeting some new people too.

Tuesday, December 8th

6pm – 9pm

55 Broad Street, 13th Floor

Please RSVP to attend: hiveat55@downtownny.com

So come celebrate with us – meet some of the behind-the-scenes people who have helped create the Hive, meet some of our sponsors, and talk to us about your ideas to make the Hive a perfect place – it’s your space too and we want to make it great!

Open House

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

Hive full logo small
You’re invited to an open house! The Hive is just about ready to open its doors, and invites you to come to our three-day open house on November 23rd, 24th, and 30th. Come to the Hive to check out the space, take a tour, have your questions answered, and feel free to even bring your laptop and get down to work. We will be open each day from 9am – 6pm at 55 Broad Street, so tell your friends and come on by!

Tomorrow will be an in-house test run to make sure everything is running properly, and we will work out whatever kinks we find before our official launch – December 1st. So come over to the open house and fill out an application so you can start working on day one (or your can fill out an application here instead).

The past week has been both exciting and frantic. All Hive related contracts got signed and finalized. The flooring went down on Monday, which meant nothing else could really be done to the space on Tuesday. On Wednesday our plumbing got certified, the cabinetry was installed, and furniture began coming in the door. Our WiFi system got tested and it is ready for you to start working.

We’ve also made lots of progress with marketing the space. Ten thousand flyers have been mailed, and we orchestrated a building drop to Lower Manhattan residential buildings with information about the open house. Broadsheet Daily featured us last week and Seth Pinsky, President at the EDC mentioned the Hive in his “Ask About Entrepreneurship” Q & A in The New York Times.

Other exciting marketing news is that our official Web site is about to go live –- no more directing www.hiveat55.com to the Downtown Alliance Web site!

Stay tuned for an early December launch party –- more details to come. I hope to see you at the Hive next week, and as always, if you have any questions, you can reach me at hiveat55@downtownny.com.

Directions to the Hive at 55 Broad Street, 13th Floor: 4, 5, 2, 3 to Wall Street; J, M, Z to Broad Street; A, C to Fulton Street; PATH to World Trade Center or just click here.
