Welcome back to Mess Around Downtown!

Happy Holidays, Downtowners! Is all that shopping making you hungry? You’ll need to eat to keep your energy up while you search for deals and whittle down your list. Thankfully, many eating establishments have opened in the last couple of weeks down here. So shop, eat, and be merry. You can also find anything you need with our handy Downtown Directory. Feel free to e-mail me at [email protected]. Thanks.

Toloache Taqueria83 Maiden Lane: 212.809.9800

Chef  Julian Medina has brought his love of fresh and real Mexican food to Lower Manhattan. The smell of fresh homemade corn tortillas will draw you in and the stellar flavors will keep you coming back for more. Try the Mexican chocolate glazed pork torta, the tilapia braised chipotle salsa with tamarind hearts of palm on a taco, or a huitlacoche (corn fungus) with queso fresco and tomatillo salsa on a burrito. Don’t think twice. Eat here.

Hudson Produce – 77 Battery Place: 212.945.0500

Hooray! A 24/7 grocer, deli, and super-fresh produce seller opens in Battery Park City. Stop by anytime to shop the huge selection of organic and conventional produce. Get a sandwich, pick up flowers, or grab some beers on your way to a holiday party. The owners will be expanding the selection as time goes on and will offer more and more locally produced vegetation as the seasons change.

City Food Market – 94 Chambers Street: 212.285.3880

A smorgasbord kind of place found only in New York. It’s mainly a Chinese buffet, but it’s also a bakery and fresh salad bar. They also make sushi, sandwiches, brew coffee to go, and make ice cream. Stop in for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

Dark Horse – 17 Murray Street: 212.608.3900

Dark Horse is a sports fan’s place to sit down, drink a beer, eat a burger, and watch any football, basketball, soccer, or baseball game. There are plenty of TVs for everyone in this neighborhoody bar that was quickly flipped from 17 Murray Bar and Restaurant. ‘Tis the season to have your next party here and watch sports while you celebrate.

Business Tidbits and Updates

Attention, gentlemen. John Allan’s man spa is now open on Saturdays from 10 AM to 3 PM. Get your groom on.

The Original Soup Man at 110 Pearl Street is now sharing its space with Ranch 1 Grilled Chicken. Two businesses in one space. Maybe they’ll invent some sort of crazy grilled chicken soup.

New York Residence at 63 Wall Street has closed.

Verizon Wireless at 130 Church Place has closed.
