Mess Around Downtown – October 27, 2009
Welcome back to Mess Around Downtown!
For those of you visiting for the first time, my name is Luke Mess. I walk around Downtown for The Downtown Alliance in search of new retailers and changes to existing retailers. I then update this info in our database so you can see the changes and be better informed through our Downtown Directory. There are over 1000 retailers in Lower Manhattan and many of them have called Downtown their neighborhood for decades. Today’s Mess Around feautures retailers that have been here so long that they have renovated, rebranded and continue to evolve into dynamic businesses catering to you, the Downtowner. Below are the changes I’ve come across this past week. If you see any new retailers or any changes to existing retailers, please email me at [email protected]. Thanks!

Roxy Coffee Shop – 20 John Street: 212-349-4704, www.roxycoffeeshop.com
Since 1944 this place has been known as Roxy Food Shop. It closed for renovations earlier this fall and re-opened last week as Roxy Coffee Shop. Thomas, the owner and ultimate Downtowner, did a great job turning this somewhat run down joint into a welcoming and well designed establishment. The menu and fantastic prices remain the same, and the food is still homemade and delicious. Roxy Coffee Shop is now open 24/7. Can’t beat the daily homemade specials priced around $6 and breakfast served all day. Eat here and do as their new motto says, “Take your time…Hurry Up!”

Foot Mart – 120 Fulton Street: 212-385-1897
This Fulton Street staple has moved up the block into a bigger and better space. Featuring a huge selection of dress and casual footwear for ladies and gentlemen. The owners work the floor and I noticed some good deals happening on nice brands. Definitely worth your time to stop by, peruse the selection and possibly patronize this local business.

Spot – 21 Murray Street: 212-374-6900, www.spotdogsrule.com
Formerly known as The Paw Stop, this Downtown dog haven has rebranded and renamed itself Spot. On top of having a retail store to buy anything dog related, Spot still offers doggie daycare, walking services and grooming. This place is filled with experts knowledgeable about everything dog related. And to top it all off, there is an actual dog working the front counter. Awesomeness.
