Time To Let It Grow

Tired of slippery sidewalks and icy winds? Sick of slush and snow? Let’s face it— we could all use a little greenery.

Mark your calendars: on April 1st, Battery Urban Farm in Battery Park welcomes all green thumbs and winter-weary New Yorkers to its verdant one-acre oasis on the southern tip of Lower Manhattan. This educational community farm nurtures 100 different kinds of organically-grown vegetables, fruits, flowers, grains, and companion plants. It also helps grow aspiring farmers, young and old alike.

From April to November, the farm hosts classes and a range of events for kids and adults. Teachers, parents, students and other members of the downtown community are invited to help plant, cultivate and harvest organic produce. There are numerous farm-based learning activities, including school-year programming, field trips and a “city seedlings” summer program. The student-harvested food is donated to school cafeterias and food pantries and sold at two annual community events.
